The real reason why Wildstar got shutdown
The cartoon graphics and horrible gameplay was the main downfall of this game. Both Wildstar and ESO launched in the game year of 2014 and now look at ESO... one of the most successful mmorpgs right now on the market while Wildstar bites the dust.

For any game to be successful in the market the gameplay has to be fun and the graphics has to be attractive. Wildstar had none of that. Thats why LOTRO and DDO were separated from Carbine studios and taken over by Standing stone games. Carbine doesn't know how to make good fun mmorpg.

If you think Wildstar was a good fun game then you have no idea what fun actually means. Go check out successful mmorpgs like FFXIV, ESO and WOW.

Yeah, they enjoyed it that much that carbine went bankrupt, they replaced all devs and that the whole game failed miserably. Mainly due to catering to minorities.

You sound like one of those annoying kids that came on here at steam launch insulting everybody. Mama did a terrible job.

Cartoon graphics where not a downfall to this mmo at all. Look at games like Fortnite and Wow. People love cartoony graphics.

It was the first few months of being hit with mountains and mountains of bugs that killed this game. Drove the core population away fast.

I heard the game was incredibly niche when it was first released. But thats only what I heard. In any case, a first impression can either make you, or break you. If a game has a bad start, sometimes thats all it takes to destroy it later on.

I tried it in beta andall I got was a "just another variant of WoW" vibe. lost intrest instantly.

Wildstar failed due to its stance on catering to hardcore. No one wanted atunments and 40 man raids anymore. It attracted a certain crowd and it was elitist trash. Once it went free to play the community was so small that it was just one big clique and they were still a bunch of pricks. that's why the game failed, why deal with such a community in a game that was on life support.

ESO and successful? Don't know a single person that actively plays it. WoW and fun? You mean more their psychological abusing in causing pressure to play with their sub-fee and their content drops that keeps the gear treadmill rolling so players are indrectly forced to play the game.

Wildstar was just not for the casual aka noob player which nowadays is the majority of a mmo's player base. The game itself was fantastic, the difficulty was just too high for most people.

ESO has 8.5 million active players.

The article is 2 years old and the game is on multiple platforms so no ♥♥♥♥ it has more players.

WildStar's downfall as the shortsightedness of the development team; or lack thereof, rather.

Pair that with a seemingly unwillingness to create new content, and instead expand on the already dull dungeons that existed.. and the housing system.. and there you have it.

Adding more difficulties to existing content != new content. It isn't going to bring in more players.. it's going to push the ones tired of the same old grind away.

Let's not forget the bug that spread around with the release of Prime+ dungeons that would outright delete items from your inventory without a trace. All that time spend grinding for that +9 or whatever? gone. GMs couldn't help.

So, it was a combination of things that's killed WildStar.

I liked the game, I really did. Raided with some great folks.. one of the best times I'd had in an MMORPG because of them alone.

But.. I saw this coming 20 miles away and bailed before I got too attached. After I found out the development team consisted of like 8 people.. and the fact that no one was willing to help replace prime gear folks spent weeks grinding on.. nope, gotta go.

In their defense, though.. the game has had next to no advertising. Granted, the difficulty of the game when it released is what scared off most of their potential customers. Once it went Steam/F2P they should have had a massive advertising campaign announcing all of the key changes to the game, including how accessible it was to new players now.

But, they could not.

Shame to see a game go, but it is what it is.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. It attracted a lot of people on release. They just all left after they hit cap and couldn't properly complete dungeons, adventures, or even the horrible attunement. Once this happened all the extra servers they added became ghost towns, driving more of the remnants away. There was also a lot of retarded management, with a complete lack of communication between teams that needed it most. Just look at the mess that was itemization (both pvp and pve).

Cartoony visuals are the best kind of visuals in my opinion. :3

I agree 100% with that opinion. Well put!

I think the reason was the fact that is a WoW game with a Sci-fi skin. WoW players wanted a new game, not a new skin. I personally don't like WoW, but its always sad to see a MMO "close" its doors. Sorry for those that did enjoy the game.

That and the toxic Casual "player base" plague, that is ruining every single MMO.
