- servers with +120 (sometimes even just more than 100) players will cause you problems sooner or later, it cant handle/feed so many people. Especially when you prefer to be the solo hunter.
(i only play herbi on 100+ servers until further changes)
- AI does spawn more when you are in a pack, but still as written above, those chances are also reduced on +100 servers
- in my last 2 games AI spawned finally after 3x red monitor, so really close to death. Now as written in patch notes AI prefers starvin players, which i can confirm a little.
- AI spawns sometimes (not always!) more, when you just keep layin on the same place, dont walk or run around. There is no "AI area" which you could suddenly discover by yourself, but what can happen is that you come to an area with more people (being there right now or just passed by), when my next point comes:
- AI spawns are +50% or more when you are close to other players (for whatever reason also herbs). But be aware, it didnt happen just once that i became the food of someone else right after my AI kill.
I recommend playing herbis on +110 people servers, and up to 100 you should have a pretty good chance to survive as carnivore, spawns can happen very very late, keep that in mind before you give up ;)
Final note - "High AI" servers have the same AI spawn as everyhwere else, it is just (successfully!) used to fish people playin on those servers. Im talking about survival mode for all points.
this is because every player has an 'alloted' number of AI that will spawn for them when your character screen litreally says "hungry". but this allotment is from a pooled resource, meaning that it's not perminatley YOUR food - if another player is hungry and decides to KOS the AI that do spawn in, then not only are they killing their own AI but YOURS aswell, because the game reads that this player is STILL hungry and will spawn in more food for them because it acts abit like a queing system [ the game reads off a list of who got hungry first and won't stop till your full then it goes to the next in line]
but also because every body NOT properly devoured grinds the AI spawning to a halt as the game still reads the AI is 'active' till it's gore [the dead bodies get 'recycled' in away]
this is why some servers have a rule where you MUST devour all of the AI you kill till your dino is no longer capable - as it lags not only the server but the games queing system because there are too many dead bodies that are still active - this is also why you don't kill the velos that spawn as they clean up the left over mess when they find it
damit i keep forgetting to check the dates!?!
I would disagree. It may seem to some casual players that the AI spawn in certain rates at certain locations, and that's true... But there is a way to affect the spawn rate, and while it may seem random and in some cases it may seem like any changes don't affect the server at all, when they in fact do...

2x Avas 1x Oro and I'm not even below 80% hunger. No I'm not in a pack, and this was on a server with just me, by myself, at Trips (A known high AI spawn location)
For reference, our server has a 100% increase in the max capacity of AI and a 500% increase in the average spawn rate per player, per location.
ServerAIRate= <float> 5.0 AI spawn multiplier around each player.
ServerAIMax= <integer> 200 Maximum number of AI that can spawn on the server.
Considering that this thread comes up high in search results AND it's a subject newer players will be looking for, providing an updated accurate response it not a "bad" necro.
@Ammon and @Klaxon thanks for the good info. You can't please everyone. One forum goob will say, "don't necro!" Another forum good will say "Don't start a new thread!"
I never understand the screeech of "don't necro" when the supposedly old thread is still valid, applicable, and prominent in the search results.
