I think it has a reasonable place in the game. Hard to kill but that's 100% only because it's hard to catch. Has nearly tissue paper health to compensate. It's a great in-game map learning tool in a game where knowing the map is a necessity though it was a slightly better one before we spawned in starving. (Also a pretty fun alternative to an observer mode) Would be a little more fun if scavenging was useful in adulthood but it's still the most amusing and most risky way to grow a pterosaur in my opinion. People starting out may be disappointed by the stamina but you can fly great distances with a little practice managing it. It's beautifully animated. Really my only issue (aside from some mild diet things) with it is a personal preference of wishing more games would shine a light on some of the smaller tailed species instead of constantly pteranodon and quetzl only but that's not really a criticism of the isle specifically. I think the isle's pteranodon is very well implemented. They even got those weird pteranodon wings to move in a way that looks natural despite the fact that no animal still alive has bones that are stretched in quite the way theirs is.

ptera is lots of fun when there isn't lag, fighting things you know you'll never be able to kill as such a small creature (like a full grown deino) usually feels pointless, but as a ptera it is simply just fun. like a seagull swarm harrasing a person for whatever food they have

They're talking about a pterodactyl.. Ptera is already in game

I personally think it'd be cool to just add it as an additional Pera cosmetic or something

I would love to be large enough to pick up baby dinosaurs whenever their parents go too far. It would need to be balanced to stam and take-off times, but it would be a very useful way to get some food. Plus with their teeth, some bleeding could also be inflicted on smaller dinosaurs by an adult Pterodactyl.

Plans are already in for Quetz to be added that can pick up small dinos and hunt Ptera in the sky

I don't see the Quetz ever being able to realistically do anything in the air. That is a mode of transport only and the chances of it grabbing extremely small prey while alive would be minimal at best, likely killing the Quetz in the attempt as not crashing into the ground after such a small target is gonna be difficult. It's also not a realistic sky hunter as its cumbersome head would throw off its flight if it tried to use it in any form of areal combat, let alone Ptera even being worth the effort for something this size. Quetz was a land carnivore with the ability to fly, but NOT able to take on anything close to its size due to its light, frail frame. If it wasn't eating anything it could swallow whole it would likely scavenge only corpses rotted enough to be easy to tear from since its beak didn't even close all the way.

The devs could go full on unrealistic with Quetz, turning it into something it's just not built to be, but due to the limitations of its bulk there will have to be some suspension of disbelief. Not really that hard honestly seeing as how these animals were genetically engineered. The next Jurassic World is going pretty crazy with their Quetz from what it looks like in the trailer, so why not The Isle?

The devs have a bit of a trial in finding that balance of "cool to play" and "realistic enough not to be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥".

Maybe just a ground or roost killer with the ability to lift sizeable corpses away

Very recently a Pterosaur was discovered in Scotland that is currently the largest Jurassic Pterosaur to date with a wingspan of 8 feet. The specimen, named “Dearc Sgiathanach”, was believed to have not even been fully grown. This could be an even enough comparison to be a rival to Ptera, yet built different enough to be its own dino with different abilities and attributes.

And it's got a tail! (I super like tailed pterosaurs and think they are always overshadowed even though they strait up look like wyvern style dragons) But I wouldn't be too bothered by a mutant quetz if that's what they want. Maybe they can even introduce that mutation thing they've teased forever with them. You start out with a somewhat accurate one and ....quetz perk is that it mutates more easily then any other species or something.

An interesting idea would be if the rod coming out of Ptera's head had a thin layer of skin attaching itself to the body so that it could be used to control the yaw of the dinosaur. I'm not talking game, just theorizing IRL

Something like that could have aided in gliding. Being able to tilt their head would be less of a strain by taking some of the required control off the wings. Something with a similar purpose as a birds tail feathers in that it's an a means of maintaining balance and possibly to make dealing with high winds easier.
