Dinos and Scent Trails
Dinosaurs aren't bloodhounds why do they have the ability to find a trail of tracks? It makes it impossible to hide when you're a helpless juvi spawn too. Anyone else agree that scent trails are pretty stupid? Footprints on mud is fine but the glowing piss trail leading right up to a meal ticket is pretty dumb in my opinion. If they don't want to get rid of the feature they should at least make juvi dinos scentless because they can't run or fight and with the scent trails they can't even hide. I notice also that tall dinosaurs can smell scent trails without having to sniff the ground and that doesn't even make sense because wolves and fork tongued reptiles must put their smelling organ to the ground in order to follow a trail.

QA branch.

In Evrima you can roll in mud to temporarily get rid of your scent and trail.
It's also pretty difficult to follow small tracks in long grass/shrubery.

Sure a juvi can just wallow all day beside a river?

There's other places to wallow other than beside the river.

It doesn't matter. when you're a fresh spawn in and other carns are around there aren't many places to wallow in time anyway. The feature of scent trails is still out of place because the dinosaurs shouldn't be able to track a scent trail unless they're part snake, monitor lizard, or wolf.

...but most dinosaurs would have had good/great smell.

There are a lot of places to wallow, you just need to know where to look.
They're much more likely to kill you if they spot you rather than smell you.

The ptera and deino can follow scent trails and birds and gators don't follow scent trails.
A lot of reptiles have a good sense of smell but the ones that track their pray by scent have forked tongues like snakes and monitor lizards, their tongues tough the ground and taste the air as well as the dirt. Wolves and dogs don't use their tongues to taste the ground but their nose touches the ground constantly when they follow a foot trail. Most birds and crocs can smell a dead carcass for miles but they still don't use that sense for tracking foot trails like hounds.

Now, I know there are places to wallow but it doesn't last long and when you spawn in on a busy server you don't get time to find such places sometimes, you just get eaten. It's worse with the deino they have to leave the water and find a place to hide before they get spawn killed by another deino and they get sniffed out pretty easily and killed anyway.

I'm pretty sure crocodiles can smell dead prey and other scents from its prey from miles away. So can alligators, they don't have forked tongues.

I think in the cases where you ''just get eaten'' it's usually because you've been spotted, not smelled anyway. Even if your scent didn't show, you'd probably still have died in those situations.

Of course they can smell dead things from miles away but smelling something dead and following a fresh foot trail are too complete different things.

I've hidden in thick foliage and see players walking about then sniffing and after sniffing they always kill me. When I get spotted it's out in the open or I was being chased.

No not exclusively dead things, but prey in general, including already dead prey. Most animals have a very good sense of smell.

You can also use it to avoid getting attacked by sniffing out a possible threat in the area!

I've survived many times as a juvi, sometimes you just get sniffed/spotted out. You can wallow, find a good hiding spot etc. Personally, I think tracking and sniffing should stay in the game, perhaps some tweaks here and there but overall it's a decent system!

The part of th e Trexs brain to do with smell is very "large" in relation to its other parts. it is sumized it had a very good smell and was able to directionise it as well.

beside if you are reaaly small its still realy hard to find you in the bushes. i had fun with a baby "something" i followed its tracks couldnt find it. left and came back again and it had moved again and hid. i played this game for ages sniffing around scaring him before going off somewhere else

A Pteras sense of smell did not help much during this event when the target was running in circles. :steammocking:
