for example the first ten feet could be middling fading out to blackness and closest 3 feet realy good and a gamma adjustment would bleach out the good vision
For the majority of time at night on Legacy I had to stay put, or very barely travel as I'd end up falling/breaking my leg far too often.
It does add a hide and survive tension for smaller dino's. Or sneak about and get the jump on someone vibe. A small view range which differs between Dino's would be interesting too. Instead of the NV outside the decent view range it could be dark as is now. I'm on the fence with this one tbh. Night does bring a different gameplay style to it as ambushes could be pulled off easier in a group especially.
If running off cliffs or into trouble is the issue then. slow down. Switch the playstyle when it gets dark. As a small group of herbivores hide and keep a lookout. Carnivores become more of a threat. Its interesting from both PoV. Plan the day so you dont have to venture out at to the local watering hole or starve. Adapt. Survive.
I don't mind the darkness personally, but for some of the larger carnivores in particular, you could barely see beyond your own feet. Which essentially means you can't do anything for half of the time (when it's dark). A large amount of players straight up didn't like it so it definitely seems like something that's worth playing about with this time around.
It would be interesting to see a different take on darkness.
Edit: Also, the fall didn't have to be that high, you don't have to be jumping off of cliffs to have broken your leg in legacy, it would simply be a "step" down, but it would break your leg haha.
I like being able to see at night; it can be dark in heavily wooded areas (as it should be!) but out on the plains you can see all around you. It's nice to be able to actually see color and take in how pretty night time IS, something I'd completely forgotten was a thing back in Legacy.
I've always been under the opinion that dinosaurs should be able to see normally at night and the only pure black night + nv should be a human thing, but that's just me personally...
I think the biggest problem people had with the old night vision was the feeling that the perimeter was so small that they wouldn't be able to react to any kind of danger. You simply weren't able to check anything around you which is crucial in this game. So they just turned it off, increased their gamma and stayed in open fields.
What I'd like to see are really dark nights (which would punish mixpackers as you said, because you can still see group members) but also some solid night vision to deal with them. I hope night vision works like a small perimeter like in that picture but more importantly adds some sort of night vision cone. That way you can also see things that are further away but you actively have to look at it and check. Both the perimeter and the cone can be bigger or smaller depending on how good the animals night vision is.
I am bored of being killed at night by gamma cheaters that see exactly the same at night that at day. Very good concept to literally remove the players or NPC if they are outside the range of vision of that dino.
Either people will log out at night and log back in when it's daytime or they will use gamma to be able to see at night.
Either way they will find a way to play the game the way they want to play it. Making it super dark at night is just going to ruin the experience for everyone.
The devs need to find a different way to do night time without causing people to want to use gamma or just log out.
