Legacy, while it has more dinos and nesting feature, has shoddy hitboxes for their dinos, and poor dino vs dino balancing and your basically a snack as a young unless your with others.
Your best bet is to frankly try both, and see which you prefer, or hit up their Trello to see what updates are coming soon, or hit up youtube for dino tatics.
If your brand new to the entire game, be warned your best bet is to learn the map and be able to use landmarks to get around. Also expect to die until you get better at learning the ins and outs. However its fun, and you can't really go wrong trying both versions out.
If you enjoy Dino RP then Legacy is a good choice for now. If you enjoy combat then Evrima is where you want to be.
I am enjoying evirma now. Its still a buggy mess, and the devs still have a very long way to go but, I think supporting them there is important. Legacy at this point is beating a dead horse. It will never get another update, all that it is now is all that it will ever be. Its up to you.
Evrima's a newly built home still under development. I had tons of hours in legacy too :) Before the termites came, and I had to move out.
I can appreciate Legacy for what it is and how Evrima came into be as a result. It’s worth the experience to switch between the two versions from time to time, if only to compare the two yourself, get a feel for the roster and perhaps propose functionality based on their control in the game.
More of a tragedy than a legacy for me, sadly. Someone's still living in the house, so they can't tear it down yet, or players are still playing it regardless. That's their choice, of course. :)
Hopefully, things turn out better in the new house?
Evrima's motto is to make every creature unique both in it's features and playstyle. The devs have also learned from their mistakes with previous maps and have instead opted to make more linear maps so player encounters don't take a century to occur.
However, Evrima is currently lacking some features from legacy that will be added in the coming months. Stuff like nesting(invite friends to spawn next to you as a baby), nightvision(and truly dark nights), skins and modding support.
Evrima is also lacking in playable creatures. You can only play as 8 creatures(4 herb, 4 carn). Again, all these creatures feel unique and have their own playstyles... But there isn't much to choose from at the moment.
So really, it depends on what you want to play as. If you want to be a big land carnivore like a T-Rex, you'll have to play Legacy for that; for quite some time at that. No other big land carnivore is going to be added to Evrima in the next several updates atleast.
Beyond that, Evrima does have a good selection of initial carnivores: Deinosuchus(ambush apex predator that lurks in rivers), Carnosaurus(fast and big stamina semi-apex), Utah Raptor(can jump on prey and deal massive amounts of damage, best for packs) and Pteranodon(mostly fishing and scavenging flyer, best for chill players who wanna learn the map or just like to terrorize babies).
I'd also say Evrima fills previous niches for herbivore players(unless you REALLY wanna play as a trike/long-neck/therizinosaurus): Stegosaurus(big beefy tank that has a mean swing, but vulnerable to packs), Tenontosaurus(fast and has a wide array of attacks to defend itself), Hypsilophodon(prehistoric skunk that can blind predators) and Dryosaurus(if you like being a victim).
Isle legacy, while inferior in terms of raw gameplay mechanics, is more stable and can still give you a good idea of The Isle as a whole. As for the vanilla versions (raw, unmoderated servers) Evrima doesn't stand out too much from it at this point in time. Grow, eat, drink, fight other players on dinosaurs.
I'd say legacy is far more beginner friendly, though depending on your server choice can heavily skew your impression and future expectations one way or another. Possibly even spoil it in light of what's changed or is going to change in the future. Stay open minded. Learn the fundamental game rules:
-same species or not, always be cautious around other players.
-know your matchups. commonly the victor of a fight is predetermined just by virtue of their dinosaur selection and/or state of growth.
-map knowledge is key. players congregate around hotspots.
-it's a hide&seek. the one who makes too much noise is going to loose. (this is more pronounced on legacy. Evrima is a more balanced mix between visual and audible cues)
Unlike server rules these are applicable regardless of game version and server selection. Legacy is fine to start out from for that.
Anyway, Legacy's days are numbered, they will eventually delete it.
Your code is broken, very simple combat system and no skill is required to survive, since you are powered by a very basic AI that appears around you.
And if it still has a large player base, it is because it is mostly "Timmys" who play Disney dinosaur families or others use it as a VRChat.
