Suitable for kids?
Hi all, my 10 year old son really wants this game. I checked it out a few months back and was concerned by some of the reports, but the latest updates seem more positive.

Can anyone comment on the safeguarding aspects of the game please? I.e. is chat filtered, if there is voice chat can it be disabled, are friend management features available, etc? Any reason why this game shouldn't be suitable for a 10 year old?

Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas!

You can always hide the chat, in order to avoid the common randomness in general chat.
Besides of that the game can be a bit demanding for a 10yo, as its a survival game where you will often get eaten and have to restart the game.

Besides of that, if he learns to hide well when he is a baby, and learns to defend/attack as an adult, he will enjoy it. I still think its a little difficult for that age, but then again, you are playing with your own realistic dinosaur, so it's awesome anyway.

10 year old's are quick learners in the gamerverse, he will have no issue navigating his way around this game

Chat can be hidden if he/you wish, he can still join groups with a "friendly call" (returning a friendly call allows you to see their name indicating you are in the same group.. must be same species), no need to chat after that, just follow others lead and expect to die eventually, it can be a brutal survival game at times

Would be more fun if you/sibling/cousin/friend played with him

Personaly i wouldn't let my 10years old child play this game.

First of all, The Isle - Evrima is in Early Access and really just at the beginning of development. Very few content. The avaiable content is still buggy and other bugs always reappear with every update. To play it now u need to have a very long breath to not get frustated and quit playing the game. Don't give your child a game where more things are broken than working.

Secondly, its a multiplayer survival game, hence u play with others. The community can be and is a bit of a salty one 'cause to survive u have to kill other players and many rage at you for killing them. Not sure if it is possible to disable chat completly... but it is possible to hide the chat, though it is very easy to unhide the chat.
Since it is a multiplayer game , u will most likely play with others. But rule nr. 1 for this game is - don't trust anyone except yourself. U will be backstabbed eventually.

Also this game can be very time consuming since u will start as a baby dinosaur and it takes up to 5.5h for the largest dinosaur to grow up. Till than it is most of the times, hide and not get eaten by bigger dinosaurs.

You can close chat but there's no filters. Although most servers regulate chat, swear words, rude comments and such can still show up.

You can make friends with anyone else on the same server as you. You can't turn this off, although you can say no to them.

This game is a survival game, other players will be killing your sons character.

There is and will be even more gore in future. (Eating other characters, blood, guts etc).

The game can be somewhat complex/frustrating as other players can kill your character and you must also kill other players.

If you're looking for a dino game I would suggest Ark (there's even PixArk that's like Minecraft) if the kid has any friends that play it and to host a server for them to join, thus allowing it to be multiplayer but having control over "who" is playing it. There's a lot of stuff you can do "just for fun" in that game and there are unique mods you can add to give them stuff to actively do, such as the mod that spawns in unique critters to be tamed/hunted and announced over the radio.

There's a 75% off special going on for PixARK, so it's worth a try to see if your kid likes it.

10 yr old kids don't usually handle PVP well, so if you do buy it for them, play along side them. This is a PG game. If labelled, I would say T for teens, and 10 isn't there yet. The game isn't designed to be a friendly multiplayer dino sim.

Which is why I said the OP'd need to host a server for his kid and friends to play on. Regardless, I think the kid would have more fun with PixARK.

I let my 6 yo son and my 4yo son watch me playing sometime. They find the dinosaurs very impressive and are thrilled when i hunt with my carno. But they are too young of course to play by themselves.
When it comes to the point where i would let my sons play this game alone/by themselves i wouldnt do so before they are 14 or older.
Maybe you can coop-play and you let your son watch you too and mybe let him control your dinosaur from time to time as a start?
concenring the caht - they only speak german and dont understand english so far. hosting you rown server is of course also a good idea.

It depends how he is. Does he get scared easily? is he patient? It's okay if u turn out the chat, but he must be a quick learner. Some kids are. Some aren't ready yet. Look a playthrough on youtube and judge by yourself. I'Ll let my 11 kid play it, but she's kinda slick and have a thing for survival games lol.

The Isle will not be suitable for children in the future. The dinosaurs are slowly getting more violent elements to them (blood, gore) and there will be other mechanics related to night terrors in the future as well. However, to go a step further, the cannibals in this game (the tribals) are going to be savage monsters that will be nightmare fuel in themselves, and are supposedly based on eating other cannibals from other tribes to stay alive. The things they build might not be pretty either.

To top it all off, there are horrifying mutants planned for the future, and the lore itself contains some very dark elements of suicide, endless suffering and other dark elements.

This game has been in dev for 5 years, no way they'll add all you mentioned before another 10 years xD
And lots of 12 years old are ''mature'' enough, we obviously don't know the same kind of kids lol

It's really up to the parents whether they're ready or not. All I'm saying, is the game (by standard) is not at all designed to be used by children. Kids still play Call of Duty even though that's been rated M for years, but I'd argue The Isle will be far more brutal than anything they'd see on CoD or another popular, M-rated game.

As far as the content that may (or may not lol) come in the future, I'd say:

Check out the game The Forest and watch the trailer(s)/check out the horror elements present in it. If you think graphic depictions of mutated, mutilated humans, desecrated corpses and effigies consisting of body parts crudely adorning spears and posts, not to mention full frontal nudity is suitable for your 10 year old, then I'm sure The Isle's future content would be fine...

Otherwise might wanna look into Path of Titans instead which is going to be a dinosaur MMO, not a horror game.

Honestly I highly recommend against having your 10 year old child play this game.

1. The Community is a lot smaller and a lot more toxic than it used to be. Most people play in groups and aren't friendly to outsiders. There is basically no content outside of multiplayer so dealing with these groups is unavoidable. A lot drama happens around the game and development, which your child probably shouldn't be exposed to.

2. The Isle has been regressing and developing for 5 years. It is unlikely to ever be finished. All of the above statements about a 'horror' experience probably won't be added until your kid is an adult anyway.

3. The most important reason is this game is a horrible time sink. It was better before with a larger more open community and when the game still had novelty to it. Most of the time people play this game in single long sittings 3+ hours. The game play loop is to walk around and try grow to adult as the biggest dinosaur possible which takes many hours. The problem is you are reset to zero when you die, so you repeat the early loop over and over. Any 10 year old should spend shorter sessions on video games, and games that are more challenging and stimulating an environment. (strategy, puzzle, adventure games) The rest of the time should be focused on school, athletics, and developing social skills with their peers. A lot of people here won't understand but it is important now to set up your son to have the best future possible when he becomes an adult.
