The Isle

How are unofficial servers allowed to pay-lock dinosaurs?
In every single game I have ever played, attempting to make money off of the game developers assets has always been a breach in Terms of Service.

Yet I notice almost every server has the ability for a player to "buy a dino". This is like copying music off of a CD and then redistributing it for monetary gain.

Then it isn't even "bought" like some pirated merchandise, instead it is solely rented for a month.

Now I can understand charging people to join a server. And I can understand removing content altogether. But I have never seen a server charge the player base to access vanilla content.

But then I look at the servers on The Isle and there are literal unofficial servers whose sole purpose is to fleece as much money as they can off the players.
You want a fully adult dino? $10
You want access to a dino I consider special? $25
You want access to our super special cult creating discord? $15
You want to get your dino back after someone killed it? $50
You want special privileges that lead to you believing you can harass other members and get away with it by appealing to a moderator? $35

If you want an example of this insanity just go to Isla Nublar's discord server.

You get my point I hope.

The reason I am making this post is because I just witnessed a video of a game developer for The Isle with brain cancer who has to create a go fund me page to pay for his treatment.

In current game, some of the dinosaurs are not allowed in base game as a playablr.

Here's a quick list:

  • Velociraptor
  • Psittacosaur
  • Orodromeos
  • Avaceratops
  • Austroraptor
  • Baryonyx
  • Albertosaurus
  • Acrocanthrosaurus
  • Ankylosaurus
  • Shantungusaur (I think)
  • Camara
  • Puertosaurus

Plain and simple-though correct me if one or more on the list shouldn't be there, you should not see any these dinosaurs in vanilla servers. The only way for them to get into vanilla server is for the server owner to inject them.

That's simply not going to be on official, they are hard banned from current survival mode.

That said, a private server owner can choose to use admin powers to put into base game what the game creators don't want you playing in base game.

Now the devs don't care because private server owners already take some load off their hands, given that to run a private server requires its own responsibilities. They already give them freedom to do as they pls in terms of rule setting and so, leaving it up to the player to decide whether or not they are going to spend 10 bucks on a dinosaur.

Seeing as you can just play on a different server, its not really a big issue.

The stance of the dev teams on this ♥♥♥♥ is they genuinely think that if someone is dumb enough to spend money on those purchases you mentioned, that's their ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ problem. They do care about it, they view it with complete disgust, but instead of taking action to shut down the practice they just raise awareness about how obscene contributing to the greed of these people is.

And moe is wrong. No animal is banned from official, they just have not been rebalanced in literal years and do not have proper life cycles and everything else that goes with it. They inject them every now and again, hell the other day my friend came across a Camara gore on US official 1 at Twins, and some people had seen a Spinosaurus running about. I've seen plenty of Therizinosaurs, among other animals, running amok on official. It's rare but it happens that they spice things up.

Also funny you link that video since that youtuber is the one who started all the pay 2 win donation shenanigans. Nycta is the birth place of this filth that has spread to nearly every single Semi Realism server out there.

Wow, I don't know anything about that youtuber, I just saw the link on this forum. I stopped watching right after the bit on the developer as the video seems to be milking it's time with other stuff that could have been separated from the "explanation" part.

Totally agree with you @MattDude, kind of annoying.

Should just put a PSA out that nobody should be paying for these as they'll likely make it into the final release.
agreed

My bad then. My thought was that their imbalance or bugs made them incompatible, and kept them off official. Didn't know an occasional injection happened on official. But glad to know I mainly got it right on why it persist on unofficial-in that players can just leave.

I think-not know-that asura is one rare server that allows all animals, no payment.

Not sucho, you can pick that one.

All the others you're correct about.

It's scummy and the devs should crack down on it.

'The stance of the dev teams on this ♥♥♥♥ is they genuinely think that if someone is dumb enough to spend money on those purchases you mentioned, that's their ♥♥♥♥ing problem.'

^ I hope this is not true because that is one of the dumbest takes i've ever heard. They should be protecting their customers from garbage like this not trying to be nonchanlant and 'cool', especially when they know a huge part of their consumer base are literal kids.

They could easily do something about it they just don't want to.

In the future when they got everything else in order-sure. More worried about current state and changes to the system. When that's done, pop on in and terminate any server with the practices.

As for kid player base, no child should be playing a game their parent doesn't investigate themselves. Especially when their kid ask for their credit card number.

It doesn't matter if they should or not the fact is that this is what happens. Kids get around things like this by just lying, saying it's DLC or the like. To a parent who knows nothing of video games seeing little Jimmy with his Spino 'DLC' running around seems legit enough, they would have no idea its some unofficial server crap.

The thing is parents don't really care, hence why games like CoD and GTA are infested with kid players so a funny dinosaur game like this would go under the radar.

It's not that I don't want to protect the children, it's that a parent can just as easily read what the kid is asking for-tell them to sit in another room-make the purchase by themselves without junior seeing.

I can agree...so lets leave it up to the parents to exercise parenting. "Don't play that game or I'll sell your laptop" "Hey Billy, why is there a bill for $300 from the credit card company?" "The hell is DLC, and why do you need an extension on your allowence?"
