I hope the protections only affects online multiplayer, not singleplayer or multiplayer with my friends.
So you'd prefer that a player not have the freedom of choice to play their singleplayer game how they want? Explain to me how a person cheating in a single player game affects you? Answer: it doesn't. Explain to me how a person modding in a single player game affects you? Answer: it doesn't. And if what you are concerned about are achievements, don't be, you'd be surprised but most Steam users I've encountered really couldn't careless about achievements (I sure don't, if I get one then ya.. great.. but it doesn't control my gaming)
That means you have nothing to fear from someone cheating or modding in this game (presently), since it has no multiplayer support, if they game does allow modding (which I sure hope it does, given that's ultimately what killed Anno 2070) then it'll garner a much larger audiance than the previous game.
On the other hand, if Multiplayer support is introduced then the developers can simply put in a series of code that will make it so only players with similiar mods or modded files can play together - for example, a group of friends who just want to have fun building their cities and not have to worry about resources, thus they'd each have the same mod (or modded files) which means they could only play online amongst themselves and not with other players.
What I described above is actually the method used in many other games, and it WORKS. People who don't want to play with those who modded their games aren't forced to, and if they want to, they'd have to get the modded files (or whatever mod is being used) that is how it should be done.
Never said that was no modding being done, all I said was that the lack of modding killed the game, that doesn't mean there aren't mods available - but compared to other, more mod friendly games, Anno 2070 is dead.
Now, since apparently I need to clarify what I said. Anno 2070 was never released with actual, real, modding tools by the developers. Its file structure is also not user friendly to most people, some yes, but not most; in other words while we can edit the .xml files and maybe increase the amount of power a building generates or reduce its maintenance, modify a vehicle to do more damage or cost less; however that is about the extent of what a normal person can accomplish with this game without havin to rely on external programs to crack into the .rda files.
Players like accessibility, they also like to have the freedom to do what they want in a game or to make what they want; when that freedom is taken away (or not present) you'll find a lot less people playing a game. For example, Anno 2070 doesn't have an official map editor (or heck, any map editor at all from what I've seen) this effectively kills it with a good portion of gamers as they prefer to make their own maps and not use random ones ingame.
The worst part about this is how unfriendly this game is to modding, when you attach a mod to it you are instantly switched to 'offline' mode, thus making it rather pointless as you can't access your ark and the tools within (Yes, I'm aware of a mod that allows you to play online, but in my experience and in the experiences of others, it has never worked. Unsure if its due to the program, or something Ubi has done)
At the end of the day, Anno 2205 will be successful *IF* the developers make the game modder friendly and create a map editor, otherwise this game will turn out the game way as Anno 2070 - very few players whom actually play it.
I tried to install this Mod and found it difficult to do so I quit.
Devs said that 2205 won't have such things (no multipleyar, no online DRM besides the uplay) so it should be fine.
