Think of each zone as how islands worked in the previous games. Your temperate zone citizens demand goods that can only be produced by importing from the Arctic and Lunar colonies. (And vice versa)
They've cut down on the micromanagement of trading, but it's not gone - Not much point in sending ships between individual island on a map, when there's no one to sink them.
The world market is a sort of emergency feature (that does require online). You basically import thing at a high price to keep your people happy while you sort out your own production of said items.
Space Station play the role of OmniCorp. The reason DonkeyHot said as long you are online is because the price of items depend on the global market influenced by every players.
Are you deaf or blind? No - You can trade with your own zones while offline...
Im sorry you must be confusing the transportation of goods with trading.
