I may be searched wrong but by google and the search forum BB there is very little explained about mecanics and calculation of it. You must guess and see what hapens.
I think (hope!) it's not a bug that you can research everything. It seems that it gives the option to change your strategy later on. I would like that flexibility.
Yes you can unlock a max of 12 workshops by switching around, everything that you have unlocked will stay unlocked even if deleted.
But at the end you should have a max of 12 workshops, and then you choose wich ones are best for your coorporation, and then activate the technologies you need.
Big problem from the Orbit DLC is that you loos a lot of money to transport good to your space station x 3000credits and no money/credit value for giving them the goods the needed.
I think dat is the big issue to compe with activing both patches/dlc
So you can only really protect yourself saving up those points and stop the auction, but you also need those points to be able to buy shares from someone else. I found that I did not have enough points, but maybe it was because I was messing around with them by buying spies and trolling the other npc's xD
