Starting layouts will be highly dependant on what you can provide, but should not really be a problem, once you understand the mechanics.
Ending layouts will be dependant on what your tech choices are. You can`t have more than 12 workshops without using cheats. The available space however can house more than 30 fully provided workshops of different kinds. So it should not be too hard to place just 12.
If there is a route from workshop to module, and it is not obstructed by another module (so a clear path) then this module will affect the workshop and a distance of that route is calculated. Each step lowers effect of that module and temperature increase from that module by 2. Max effective range is 6 iirc. That means having a clear path of less than 7 steps between 2 workshops with base temp of 40 will add 30 more temp to each of them - so don`t do that. Either block that path with something or make it longer. If a module has base temp of 6, and it is placed more than 3 steps away from workshop, it will not affect the temp - so only the cooling modules can lower the temp.
Placing two solar panels 3 steps away from a workshop will provide the same effect on requirements as placing one 2 steps away and another one 4 steps away.
3 out of 5 workshops with low base temps are quite easy to place in any amounts close to each other. The first available to you, Bio - is not.
