So activation Key Needed?

I just got the game and need a key to link it to Steam? There is no key and am out of ideas as to figure out what my next step is. This is all super confusing... and largely irritating

Steam doesn`t have keys. Uplay does (at least that was the case earlier). You need to have accounts in both systems and link them. Then Uplay will pick up your purchase from Steam and associate it with your account (creating new key in the process).

why even let steam sell it if they force you to have a Ubi launcher too? ugh

Probably because the game was developed outside of Steam and so technically it doesn`t use Steam DRM. The only options Ubi has are to either employ developers to rebuild the game specifically for Steam (and do this for every game and every version) and rely on two different DRM mechanics instead of one, OR do nothing with the games at all and have no worries about 3rd parties businesses. Obviously the second choice is easier and cheaper.

While you won't need an activation key to launch the game, if you don't yet have a Ubisoft account signed in, you may receive this prompt

As Panterich has already noted, a Ubisoft account is required along with the Ubisoft Connect launcher to launch the game as it needs to be bound and activated to your Ubisoft account before proceeding
