I know I'll miss several of the differences, but here's a few.
1 - 1404 has actual island-to-island trade routes. 2205, the trade routes are essentially handled in the background.
2 - 1404 has actual risk of combat. Pirates can attack your trade routes, your islands, your ships. They're pretty easy to keep placated, but you'll eventually want to deal with them, whether by force or bribery. 2205 has.... well, to call it combat would be insulting to the Anno series. It's an asinine minigame.
3 - 1404 has actual factions. You can peeve off your neighbors and if you keep doing that they will turn hostile. With 1404, Dawn of Discovery Venice, you can buy out islands by buying chairs on the City Council. Buy enough of those and you can buy the island. That will, of course, peeve off whoever you bought the island out from under. 2205 has literally none of that.
Anno 2205 is pretty. As actual Anno fans would tell you, 2205 is not really an Anno game. It's actually rather insulting to the franchise.
I would recommend 2070 and it's DLCs. It's like a mix of hi-tech and 1404 and some interesting and fun game play that's slightly different to 1404. But out of the two you're asking about, 1404 is the only choice.
Whether you chose 1404 or 2070, welcome to Anno addiction. 2205 will more likely give you a bad impression of the franchise.
In general, Anno titles are among the more complex games around though I don't have 2205 to comment on that specifically. You need patience and a love for interaction and quests. It isn't a typical simulator like cities skylines and are fun in their own right.
eh i think Anno 2205 is a great game in the franchise, though i dont know why they still tack on things like combat to the game, it just doesnt really fit. In 2205 you can buy other peoples land and their is a global trade market along with a stock market. Combat in all anno games has always been asine lacking even basic rts mechanics even from the days of warcraft 1 and 2. Overall i would like the last 2 anno games over 1404 just becuase I dont really care about the time period that 1404 takes place in, but your free to make your own choices.
