Trackmania Turbo

Trackmania Turbo

What the hell with all the bad reviews?
Trackmania Turbo sits at a mixed because of a constant flow of reviews that are unfair to the game. So many reviews complain about the fact that they cant annoy people by playing "Watch Me Whip" on there horns and a lack of dedicated servers even though there is no lack of servers and most have good ping, but still ping doesn't effect your preformance. 100 people is still a lot of people on one track. I saw one negative review that actually bought up one gameplay mechanic that contubuted to the bad score but it was more of an opinion. Honestly it is a good game that was ment to be a console spin off but they decided to give a dam good pc port. This is the most fun I have had in a racing game in a long time and I would hate to see the game have a small player base due to picky reviewers.

i agree with you mate.. 100% !! i despise steam reviews these days because ppl are doing the same ♥♥♥♥ on all games.. if they dislike the slightest thing they try to destroy a game with reviews. especially ubisoft games are ♥♥♥♥♥♥ because ppl hate uplay and this alone is reason enough to downrate the games. (i hate uplay too but i would never downrate a great game or even a masterpiece because of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like that).

Disagreeing with your opinion is not being a toxic cesspool. If you want an echo chamber feel free to go somewhere that doesn't hurt your feelings.

A lot of people are slamming Turbo because they honestly expect better from Ubisoft and are used to better treatment. Many people disliked Trackmanaia 2 because due to Ubisoft's handling of the sequel and making every environment a separate game meant that swapping between modes mid-game was impossible. Multi-environment servers could not exist, this may have been fixed now, I cannot know for sure. The system overall however was supremely clunky. Funnily enough just like how people are angry at Turbo being a step backwards people were angry at TM2 being a step backwards from United. People saw Turbo as perhaps a means for Ubisoft to make amends by finally providing all the TM2 environments in one well rounded package.

Now, most of us understand this is a port. What most of us don't understand is how supremely lazy Ubisoft were in handling the port and providing the tools and community support that people have come to expect from a trackmania game after over a decade of enjoying them. I'll even leave out the massive elephant in the room that is Uplay to demonstrate that people have more than enough to be angry about without needing to bring that up (as valid a criticism as it is).

The track editing system is utter garbage. This is a major, major issue when the entire point of trackmanaia is having near infinite content from a robust track builder. I could forgive almost everything else in Turbo had they not messed up here.

First of all, you cannot name tracks you make. Why? I have no idea. I'm not even sure this is a console limitation since last I checked all the consoles have virtual keyboards. Now this isn't too much of an issue when you only have ten or maybe twenty tracks. But some people make hundreds of tracks, we even had dedicated (fan made) websites for the hosting and sharing of them. Trying to pick through a sea of hundreds of tracks with only numbers and a vague description of "style" and a tiny thumbnail is horrific.

To add to this there is no way to easily upload tracks to places other than Nadeo/Ubisoft's official servers. In fact I'm not sure if a local copy is even saved at all and I was pretty through in checking my local files. It used to be rather easy to find your map files (named for convenience) and at only a few kb each easily share them with friends directly. There were many great tracks made in older TM games where a group of people collaborated to make a single monolithic track, each responsible for cramming as much brilliance into their 10 second stretch as possible. These were some of the best tracks I had ever played too, and seeing "famous" editors unique styles mesh together was something beautiful.

This isn't even getting into how laughably clunky the new editor is, too many things are automated that it makes being creative with the system a pain. The level of difference cannot be appreciated until you see TM2's or United's editor side-by-side with Turbo's. This most amazing part? The advanced editor is ONLY compatible with M+KB so you can't blame it's lack of functionality on consoles!

Second is the huge lack of dedicated servers. Now yes I know it's a port, and consoles can't host servers. But it seems pretty lazy to not offer the functionality here. It can't be that hard of a feature to code in after having thirteen years experience of including it in past games. To use the fact that it is a port as an excuse begs the question why oh I dunno... graphics settings are still an option. Consoles lack those as well after all and it could be argued that with TM's huge multiplayer focus dedicated servers are just as critical to enjoying the game.

Now I will be first to admit that a LOT of community servers in TM are awful, most use an incredibly obnoxious UI system that cannot be disabled without turning off the game UI as well. However they also had great factors like being able to dynamically add player made tracks (again, named for convenience!) into the track listing dynamically just by pulling the data from community run track hosting websites. Most also gave you the option to download the track after playing it to your computer to race it offline, or even edit it (if the builder did not set it to read only).

Most importantly however is the fact that it brings serious doubts to the long term future of the game. Eventually Ubisoft/Nadeo will decide it is no longer financially viable to host those servers. After that you suddenly have all the multiplayer functions of a primarily multiplayer focused game vanish into the ether. For comparison, the track hosting and server hosting functions for the original thirteen year old TM are still intact due to them being community driven.

I won't get into mods, custom soundtracks, re-textures and the like because it is fair enough that these are not supported in a port. Although it is a bit of a sting considering at one point the game used to openly embrace this feature and let you download new car skins and track textures through the game UI.

I don't think it is unreasonable for people who have spent a decade enjoying numerous very simple features to be angry at their sudden exclusion. Most of these are pretty small things in and of themselves but have a huge impact in the game's quality and shouldn't really be a huge issue to an experienced team of developers to include. People have a right to expect a high standard of service given the cost of admission.

This game is an utter disgrace compared to the older versions of TM. They have an excuse though, it was made for consoles and ported to PC :gaper:

I guess it was rather dumb of Nadeo to join Ubisoft. They pretty much ♥♥♥♥ up everything they get their hands on. It's only about cash, not us(the gamers).

Amazing review by Herrick! You should post that on the store page mate.

Herrick said pretty much everything I think about this new TM iteration. The basic point is, we have been supporting Trackmania and Nadeo for over a decade. We played their betas and helped hunt bugs and add/tweak features that made their games amazing for all.

When you take everything that made Trackmania what it is out of the game, what are you left with? Some downloadable garbage game that is fun for a while and then gets forgotten after a few weeks.

It is important to let people review the games noting what is important to THEM. The ratings are there to decide if most people agree or not. And if most people do, and these negative reviews are the most appreciated, then I have one thing to say to you: you are self centered and egotistic to such a high degree that everyone else's opinion that doesn't match yours is "toxic garbage".

I for one would rather not see toxic threads like this one, but you are allowed to express your opinion unfortunately. That means that everyone else is allowed to as well.

You made a big mistake with the editor as it seems you are using the standard edition of the editor because they put an extremly powerful editor in if you click the cog in the upper bar and click classic editor. Then you will get significatly more powerful tools.

Yea I also can't understand it and as I only played stadium and nations forever before I have so much fun with this game and the different enviroments and it runs very nice :)

Good game, too bad about the precious, self entitled, perfectionists that downrate the game.
Serres Apr 20, 2016 @ 6:51am
I can only agree with Zell and Herrick here. The new TM totally lost the spirit of the old games.

Now i know that this is a port..but why so simple? Nobody asked for that! Even for a console game this Spin-Off is awful as hell.

i really hope this is their last try to port TM to other consoles or else they'll lose their playerbase entirely..

I don't really see how annoying people with Katy Perry horns was the "spirit" of the older trackmanias. I doubt I would ever make a custom skin or model and the gameplay is still great. The track builder is not automated and powerful if you use the classic editor.

I'll likely be giving it a thumbs down too, if I review it. The store page is still hyping VR support, which is why I bought it on launch day instead of waiting. The devs hyped VR from the very beginning, and have lately been silent to the point of hiding, while many other devs are updating their games to work with the latest VR runtimes. The game itself is decent, but I don't appreciate the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ from the devs about VR support. Also, TM2 could be played with a wheel. In TMT, my gas and brake are inverted when using a wheel, I have to step on the gas to slow down and step on the brake to release it. Don't tell me TM should not be played with a wheel, I was crushing my controller times with a Rift and a wheel in TM2, before they gave up on VR support for that game too.
