1. United - Has 1st and 2nd generation envis + stadium, huge variety of tracks.
2. Sunrise - 2nd generation envis, imo the best ones. Very nice tracks.
3. Turbo - Remade ^2 envis with remade handling, very competitive and great tracks.
4. ^2 - 2 completely reimagined envis from 1st generation and updated Stadium + new envi. Very competitive, but quite bland tracks.
5. Nations - Only one envi, stadium. Decently fun, decent tracks, very competitive, but is and has always been bland to me.
6. Original - Bland 1st gen envis with bland tracks, not very competitive, this was when Trackmania didn't know what it wanted to be.
Btw what I mean by the gen things:
1st gen - Desert, Rally and Snow from the Original.
2nd gen - Island, Bay and Coast from Sunrise.
^2 gen - reimagined Desert (Canyon), reimagined Rally (Valley), an updated Stadium and a brand new envi, mixture of Bay and Island (Lagoon).
Turbo gen - remade envis of ^2 gen.
I do have TMU outside of steam, but didn't play it for a long time because I missed the previously mentioned features.
As for TM2, I'd like to ask - which one's car handling is the most like the old Island-car? I see the "Island/Bay-hybrid" note above, but considering I hated the car handling of bay, that's not really a help for me... The roadster-handling in TMS was sort of fun, too.
( I also would like to avoid uplay if possible... heard too many negative things about it in the past. From what I just noiticed, Turbo and Lagoon seem to be the only ones who require that [ contrary to what I so far thought ] - is this correct? )
Modern TrackMania games lack the game modes, the functional menu design, and the overall presentation of classic TrackMania games. Personally, I can't be bothered with the newer TrackMania games. The first one and Sunrise are just so much more comprehensive and superior in its challenge design. Also, no Platform and Puzzle game-modes? Then it's not a full TrackMania game.
TrackMania United Forever is like a rehash of Sunrise, but with inferior maps (and I think with far fewer maps) and progression, with an awful menu design, and without the great music that's in TMS.
The game I'd most consider buying from Nadeo these days is a re-release of TrackMania Sunrise + the TMS Extreme expansion, if it were to be released on Steam and GoG, without DRM that makes the game nearly impossible to play after a certain amount of time.
Definitely agree. :)
