Unfortunately it's something that can happen, and you can try to restore the backups. Try opening your character save file in notepad - is it blank? Then try opening the bak1 and bak2 files in notepad as well. If they're all blank, there's nothing we can do. But if at least one of them has text/numbers in it, you can safely delete the others, and change the .bak1/2 bit of the name to .char, and the game will load up the backup instead.

It is wayyy more likely, that the game has a save file corruption bug, that needs investigating and fixing. Ideally by looking at the corrupted save files.
