I only got up to level 50 on my minion character though, it might get better later with more stat stacking or some of the later sets.
Other than the raise dead which you found already, there are a few different types of summons you can have, in the poison tree a choice between melee zombies and ranged floating eyes, there are also temp summons that proc called living bloods.
In the fire tree you have a choice between ranged imps and melee devils and an ultimate skill to summon a temp demon.
Other than summons you can find equipment that can spawn pet/minion, so far I have found a ring that summons a goblin, a whistle that summons a 3 headed hell hound and a helmet that summons a demon.
You can't really let your summons do all the work and kill everything for you, they are better at combat support and with the correct gear and skills they can be pretty good tanks.
I got my summoner to lvl 100 but still trying to get the set items and stuff to make the most of it.
Minions are tremendously useful as distractions and meatshields. So while they aren't something to build you character around, they are still doing something for you.
I would advise you to make a build, and put in some appropriate minions along the way.
Demon Lord's Regalia
2) +25% Fire Damage
3) Spawns a Hellhound companion for each Soul held. Hellhounds have 66% of the Warlock's Fire Damage and have 66% of his health.
4) +6 to Maximum Souls.
But after you hit level 100 and have 100-200 mastery, It start to shine.
I suggest to play with Nuker/DPS build first to hit level 100 and get 150+ mastery asap.
Then respec to any pet build of your choice.
Warlock have only 2 type of permanent pet but have many skill and passive to scale his pet damage to the roof.
Warden have 4 type of permanent pet but have fewer passive/synergy skill to boost up his pet.
He also have wisp build which consider as another pet build that very strong in late game.
Never try to make pet build with another 2 class yet.
