Without an active form of damage, you can't reliably nor efficiently kill monsters. Not without raising the passive damage to ridiculous proportions.
P.S.: friendly suggestion... you should let Steam wrap the text instead of pressing Enter at arbitrary places in paragraphs.
Don't worry about thorns not being too good right now.. I got a ton of new item powers coming in the future which will provide interesting ways to use thorns!
Thanks!
If you build for it effectively, thorns damage can get well into the tens of millions in the character sheet, then it can be augmented from there to do significantly more.
Even without reach affecting the Templar's thorns, for example, it does shoot out chain lightning for 8 and 9-digit damage to multiple enemies. That sounds pretty close to what you imagined without having to use any affixes on gear, thus allowing for resists, regen, health, etc.
