Getting the Best Upgrades for Castles (i.e. Great Tenshu, Great Stone Wall, Outer Wall)

So I was playing in a game as a retainer that went up from the Battle of Itsukushima (1555) all the way passed the Incident at Honno-ji (>1584) with a custom clan. I'm busy as as a regent kicking ass against the Oda and Uesugi from Kansai and I look over at Tottori castle and it has an outer wall instead of a dual annex. By no means have I been able to ever upgrade the tenshu, wall or enclosure to their greatest peaks.

Now I know it was a dual annex before because I first upgraded it as such earlier in that game. It was left under the control of the daimyo so I had no contact with it for a while.

I've compared Tottori Castle to Odawara castle, the only castle in every scenario that definitely has an outer wall, and the two don't seem special at all. I tried seeing if Ishiyama Temple (what would have become Osaka Castle and is a significant base no less) could upgrade its dual annex into an outer wall, but it didn't give me an option.

Someone tell me if they've noticed this with Tottori castle or any other castle in their games r if they were able to manually upgrade the enclosure, wall or tenshu to the outer wall, the great stone wall or the great tenshu.

I can’t speak for every castle but there some castles that require either the upgrade that gives your castles cannons, or the Sanada Ward which requires a member of the Sanada clan to build to transform its self in to the next level. Try to looking at what kind of town the castle sits on is it a port, mountain/hill or plain in Iron Tringle the difference between mountain and plain effected what upgrades you could build. If that doesn’t work then some castles might not have all the options available, but for the I.A to make an upgrade that isn’t in the options sounds like a bug.

Those special upgrades such as great tenshu, outer wall and great stone wall are ONLY for certain special castles only, Azuchi, Osaka and Odawara being the ones i know offhand.

Azuchi is the upgraded Kannonji castle and if Nobunaga has that castle in earlier scenarios, an event may trigger where he builds Azuchi which replaces Kannonji, and then automatically gains those 3 special structures. Any scenario after the official year he builds Azuchi, Kannonji becomes that castle with all those special upgrades from the start, except for either the last scenario or both the last 2 where it is a different castle altogether.

Same with Osaka, its the upgraded form of Ishiyama palace, and Hideyoshi usually upgrades that in about 1584/1585 and again every scenario after that its there from the start.

Odawara castle has all the special upgrades in every scenerio from start to finish as far as i know.

I personally have never seen Tottori or any others with any such upgrades, but who knows, maybe i just havent played through a game long enough.

I was playing with a custom clan and not only my Lord's castles had Outer Walls(like the fortress of Miki Castle in Harima), but my vassal Matsumae Kakizaki and Nijo Palace, that I captured from the Oda.

When I enacted the War Ban and finished that scenario, there were 21 castles/fortresses with Outer Wall(Including Odawara, the only "Special" Castle), the complete list is:

The first castle of this custom clan was Kaizu in north shinano(Birth of Nobunaga), I later gave it to Yukitaka Sanada, some years later, there was an Outer Wall
