- it has all the cotent of sphere of influence
- add's officer play ( tho some dislike this)
- more characters, updated portrait
- osaka campaign - is pretty fun, and closes out the period well.
- thier are a few bugs, the ai dose not raise new lords when you play as an officer. which I dont suggest doing anyway koei did a ♥♥♥♥ job designing it. However,If you want to play as a ruler this is the better version.
Normal. Ascension was incredibly rushed. If you like Sphere of Influence then you can buy Ascension. Except for the Osaka campaign, which is like ROTK XIII Hero Mode, there's no reason why you should buy Ascension instead of Sphere of Influence. Take it from a guy who played a lot Sphere of Influence, get used to it first and then try Ascension. It's clearly the best way.
You can micro-manage in SoI by increasing your daimyo's literal sphere of influence. You cannot control your faction's Houses in Asc.
Officers can be freely re-distributed and moved in SoI. In Asc, officers in your faction's Houses can't be moved.
Battles were also changed quite a lot, for better or worse. I find the "interior walls" battles in Asc a big chore, though the "auto-smash castle walls" after manual battles in SoI was too broken.
If you like to play as a Daimyo and control an entire clan, get SoI.
If you like to play as a retainer maybe you'd like Ascension more.
Personally I find Ascension needs a lot more work. SoI is better if you want to run through all the ingame Events to watch cutscenes and get to know each clan's history/story.
Sphere of Influence is a complete game. Ascension was incredibly rushed and as I said, you should only buy it first if you want to play the Osaka scenario. Which to be honest you will get easily lost as a newbie giving, that the Ascension system is more complex, and an extra scenario, that is pretty much an Hero Mode, isn't worth what you pay for it.
Speaking of new content: Playing as a retainer is fun but it doesn't come close to past Koei experiences. A lot of people complained. The event editor also needs more work. As for portraits and officers, I made a project with all of them to download in SoI.
Long story short: Ascension is fun but buy Sphere of Influence first. If you like it, then try Ascension.
Officer play I’ll be honest I thought it would be awesome but it turned out be somewhat dull, if the officer you are playing as has low politics development will be slow, on the other hand if your valor and leadership are not high enough you won’t be gaining honor any time soon, this in my opinion makes management more annoying than just being a daimyo.
Might go for original first
