Help finding the Wraith
Hi, I was having trouble solving the Joel quest before I woke up (after only 2 days exploring the catacombs - you'd think they'd give you more time, since the enemies there kill you if you're underpowered...)

I see to solve the Wraith quest, you have to kill it first, then destroy its phylactery ... but I can't find the Wraith in the first place ... the ghost says that Joel is in the crypt in the Loco room, but when I go to that crypt, the only interactions I get from it are to look at it and to try to open it, which fails. How do I trigger finding the wraith and its battle / saving Joel? Where is the wraith? Seems like I've mapped all of the catacombs and still unable to find it.

You haven't found the right place. It's west of the fence, there's a giant force field blocking the room and the wraith attacks you when you go up to the force field

This task is time/day controlled. It's around Day 32 that Joel disappears. I believe you can find him trapped on Day 33. You can save him without battling the Wraith, but that's up to you. If you are looking for him before or after this time frame, the quest cannot be completed. (pretty sure it's Day 33. But first his being missing is discussed in class.) If you fail to rescue him, he will die.

Hi -- okay, I am on day 34 -- From the Fencer's Room, I have a choice of going northwest to my dad/uncle's memorial (no barrier there). I leave the Fencer's Room, into the Fred room, no barrier there, but I can go northwest into the Shadow Room between the two giant heads. There is no barrier in the Shadow Room. Can you give me some other landmarks that the barrier is near? (Or maybe specific names of the room ... I have mapped Light Warm Noble Water Fred Peace Shadow Loco and Glory ... am I missing any?)

The catacombs are huge man. He's over on the west end, I think north of the lava room and the water room

Ha! You're telling me. I spent three in-game days just mapping it, collecting treasure and killing enemies (using tons of heal potions) and then Joel was dead. They should at least give you time between entering the catacombs for the first time to explore it completely before one of your schoolmates dies. I still cannot find any barrier - so landmarks (or specific directions from the Fencer ghost) would be helpful if anybody can help!

You can get to the catacombs way before Joel gets captured. I had already completely mapped the place before that happened.

And also sneak around to avoid combat, that's what I did, only killing when I had to. In order to not need healing.

The fence should tell you where he is, I just followed the directions of the fence.

Going by memory, I believe you go through the door northwest of the fence that has the faces on either side. Then you go west, keep going west, a little bit south and you should see the giant purple force field.

His phylactery is way on the other side, south west of the fence room (south back towards the entrance) over in the water room north of the lava room where the minotaur is, just west of the entrance of the catacombs that leads you to under the gazebo

Oh -- okay ... ha ha. I finally found it. So totally NOT in the Northwest, which the ghost tells you. It's in the SOUTHEAST corner of the Loco room, which is in SOUTHWEST of the ghost Fencer. I was so involved in trying to beat the pirate quest that I had no time to explore the catacombs before it was mentioned at the beginning of the second term. Yeesh. Too bad I had to sell my panda stuff in order to afford the magical dagger to save Joel. But he was the guy I romanced, so I felt obligated go back to an earlier save and save him. (I always choose the wrong guy...) Thanks for your help!

But don't you have to go north west of the fence first through a door, then you go west and a little south? As the crow flies it should be directly west if the fence but you need to go north through a door first.

Especially considering there's a huge branch to the lava room and water room to the south west of the fence, but you gotta go south first. They may have confused the player by saying south west and would have led you to the lava room, which is opposite of where the lich himself is located

At least I followed his directions and found it

The "Light" room's doors, when hovered over, show you which direction is which in the Catacombs. The upper right is east, upper left is north, lower left is west.

Fester telling you that the wraith is in the northwest is correct. Keep in mind that Fester isn't giving you the location of where the wraith is within the "Loco" room, but rather he's giving you the location of the "Loco" room itself. While he's in the southwest corner of the "Loco" room, the "Loco" room is in the northwest corner of the catacombs.

There's an optional way to save Joel. Pay the fence to ask a question. Ask about Joel. Go through the rest of your school days. Eventually you'll sit down to dinner and tell everyone that you know where Joel is. Thomas will tell you to get Moira immediately. When you leave the dining hall, go to the infirmary. It will be unlocked today. Tell Moira. You'll get dragged along to save Joel. Moira will fight the Wraith for you and you can just grab Joel and run.

I also did this by encountering the wraith after talking to the fence (and he wasn't selling the bone Sai til the next day), running from battle, then telling my teacher at the beginning of class, he sends me to Moira and I Skip the entire day to save Joel with her
