I guess the most common way to play such a gamer, is as power fantasy and be the good guy, so go with that. It's also the easiest difficulty because you have a shild.
That being said, the easiest ending to attain that isn't playing as Contra, is either the Good or Evil endings. Not the Pure Good or Evil endings, just the regular ones. Also, pure evil is a lot easier to beat than pure good.
Seriously though, if you're only planning on playing this game once, just play however the hell you want and don't worry about which ending you end up getting. That being said, I initially intended to only play this once, and I ended up 100% the entire game, aside from beating the game as shorty, Bruce Campbell, Conan, or the wizard dude. The fact that it's short and only takes about as long as your average mgs to complete helps.
I finally caved in and playing my second run through as the stranger is sooo satisfying, love using the kickback to my advantage
Try playing as Contra. That's stupidly fun. Especially combined with the jetpack.
Maybe on next go round. Trying to only upgrade strength, no health or mana, going for the glass cannon approach with stranger
