Seconded *_* I can't say enough how I loved this game, so much I did play through with every possible character, the wizard, the barbarian, the gunner, even just the sword from the start and Lachhh and Kojak modes

Uhh, I'll interpet this as "recent Metroidvania sidescroller that looks it's from the NES era". So, maybe the Blaster Master Zero trilogy. Or the retro Bloodstained games.

Other than that, Blasphemous is obviously quite similar. Then there's the other recent Metroidvanias like Hollow Knight, Ender Lillies, etc...

if you lloking for something NES like and tough as Nails could I reccomend you to Cyber Shadow? a great Homage to the original ninja gaiden game

Edit: also something similar (metroid vania) but perhaps not would be Dark light, Steel Assault , F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch, Death's Gambit, Blade assaukt, Panzer Paladin, Legend of Tianding, katana zero, Dust: an elysian tail, mark of the ninja etc. just some recommendations

For little known metroidvanias that are quite difficult but still fair enough, I'd strongly recommand Cathedral, very pretty pixel art imo

Just finished it too. Stumbled upon it by accident and gave it a try. My god it is fun. Same sound effects as shovel knight, but still good stuff.

A metroidvania that doesn't quite fit your criteria, but which I nonetheless really enjoyed, was Fearmonium. Have a look at it.
