Direction is important. Yeah, killing monsters is great. But having a back story, or even cities/settlements to interact with people would be fantastic. Even if it's all segmented side quests. Think Skyrim/Fallout, minus the major storylines.
You have places you can go with people to interact with and quests to do, but it's 100% up to you. Hehe, that rhymed.
You say that it is a big goal to encourage us to do what we want, moment-to-moment. Give us the opportunity to delve into a world with substance and people and let us decide what we want to do within it. This would seriously be amazing.
The reason Minecraft got boring for me is the fact that there was TOO much freedom. I like the fact that you can build anything you want, but a little bit of guidance would be awesome. The intro part of the game gives the start of a story. Now we would like to know more.
Let us meet random NPC's who tell us about what happened and how we can help them. Then we as the player can decide to totally ignore the side quests, or to be a good knight and help the citizens :) Games like these really need something more then just building things.
So far I am enjoying the game very much and cannot wait to see more added to the game. :D
