Minecraft has a far larger community. If you're 13 or older, you may want to look into Star Made instead. It's like Minecraft, but in space. As such, it's also a bit more complicated (block placements matter, and you need to put in more thought into how you want to build your ship and power systems).

Minecraft loses most of it's fun after getting diamoneds.... then the rest is just one big farm and grinding fest. Starmade is an infinite universe with many planets and stations ot explore, and it's mutiplayer. It's also has built-in greifer protection for factions (make a station a faction home, and generally it can't be touched, depending on server settings).

Don't get me wrong I like Starmade but it is a bit buggy depending on the system and hardware, I'd say this though. Like Nightwalker said eventually Minecraft becomes bland with no objectives and even with mods it's only really good with friends.

Though Starmade is good, it's not as graphical as Portal Knights or Minecraft and can run like crap if your system is quite low.

I'd definitely recommend getting minecraft as a first game. The game is WAY more complete and will take quite a while before you get to diamond. The content is there. Personally I fully enjoyed terraria over all though.

This game is far from complete and I don't know when or if it will be updated anytime in the near future.

I'd recommend this more personally, ironically for similar reasons as Seaquake. Even though this game isn't finished, as a product it feels far more feature rich in comparison to Minecraft. The only reason to go for Minecraft instead would be the mods however, since theres a lot of variety to be found there.

MC would be decent if it ever got a good patch, the fanbase is dying and people are moving on to better games like this. Portal Knights has better grapics, more armor and weapons, hell it's brand new and already has more bosses than MC. The blocks are prettier, and getting ore doesn't feel like just going in circles looking for diamonds for hours. Also, you can repair items, so by the time you get that diamond sword you only get a couple hours of fun before you have to make another one.

The only reason MC got popular was because it was new for it's time, and little kids (the only people who play it) could run it on their macs and Alienwares
