Is there anything to do other than building?
Hi I'm curious if this game has a good quest line or "story mode"

Is there anything to do other than building stuff?

For me I got really bored of Minecraft. After the building there's nothing to do.

I wish we could build a cool castle then try to survive an onslaught of enemies

Or go mining and actually find interesting stuff like real loot or fun interesting puzzels or bosses

Or go through a quest thing with actual interesting NPC that are memorable.

It seems all these "building" games lack the actual"game" part always. I mean I get that people love creating things. But for me there's got to be more substance.

Do you yourself understand how abstract and subjective this is?!

There is much more to do here than just building, and IMO Portal Knights is nothing like Minecraft other than the blocky building style. There are events and quests, there is a story (sort of), enemies to kill, dungeons with loot to explore, bosses to conquer (with hard mode versions that are actually difficult to kill), and timed "rifts" with puzzle type elements. The world is huge and can be regenerated without destroying your home base. You also have the choice of building your structures on either a peaceful vacant island or customizing one that already has enemies on it (and a way to keep them out). You can even move some of the NPCs wherever you want, although they are not very interactive once you complete a quest. There are fun costumes, armor, weapons, furniture, to buy or to loot, and multi-player (so bring your friends).

I've put many hours into this game, and I think it's worth every penny (including the DLCs).

Also, a new and improved creative mode. You have unlimited access to most of the game building supplies. You can build your own castle with dungeons (or copy one from adventure mode) and then place enemies. Creative mode now has a test play mode so the enemies come to life and you have your own adventure to play. Many are placing their adventures into the workshop that players can download into there game and play. Creative Mode also now has buttons, switches, etc, that can be connected to door, lights, etc to create puzzles like you will see in the rifts.

You can actually play without really building much of anything, except some crafting tables to level up your gear.
It's definitely a real progression/RPG/adventure game with a story and a ton of quests and progression. It's more like Dragon Quest Builders or Terraria in terms of game loop. You have the option of building pretty stuff and messing with cosmetic vanity items and stuff to place around your base, or just purely powergaming and fighting your way through, crafting only your next weapons and armor.

You have your starting quests that have you setting up a base with crafting stations and basic tools and weapons, and getting portal shards to open up new locations with NPCs who have sidquests and story quests.
Those lead you to further locations have better tiers of resources to upgrade your crafting tables and make better weapons/armor/potions, etc.. All the while the main quest is taking you through bosses who gate off higher tiers of locations.
Meanwhile there are dungeons with chests, special events, lots of drops and cosmetics and vendors and just a ton of content now if you like progression. I'm usually kind of a powergamer in most games, but I also like collecting all the paintings. The trophies from killing monsters are pretty cool to have, too.

The DLC has a lite roguelike progression system where you complete a few levels then spend your points to get better equipment and items and farm faster or go deeper the next time.

I've had this game a long time, but lately it's gotten really good. It's especially fun with a group - the 4 of us play on LAN and have a blast.

The quests are totally random on normal islands.
There are 3 special that unlock boss portals for you to progress.
there are 3 towns filled with quests which have some sort of story, in the third town you are forced to complete those quests to progress

The building is the only thing that keeps you playing (unless you count killing the same boss 20+ times to get 1 item as stuff that keeps you playing)
Depending on solo/multi and will to rush you can finish the all islands in 20-60H
Achievements will take longer because random events happen every 6H or something like that, it's basically start game, do event, close game, return in 6H, do event, rinse and repeat 200 times for achievement.

Enemies can't attack your buildings, they can spawn inside but there is structure that prevents that.

You won't find random bosses during mining, there are 3 bosses, 3 minibosses and 3 hardmode bosses(recolored bosses) in fixed locations.
The game doesn't have any puzzle stuff.
You can find loot chests randomly when mining, but they are the same as dungeon loot chests.

It sounds like you are looking for game like terraria ;D
