Can't unequip a pet?

My daughter has a level 13 character with a turtle pet, and she wants to get rid of it and use a different pet (the white owl she found) but she doesn't have the turtle in her inventory OR on her action bar, so she can't unequip it. When she tries to equip the new pet the game tells her to first unequip her old pet.

Try putting the pet into a chest, that should unequip it.

There's no pet in her inventory, that's the problem.

In the 20 Feb 2020 update the games added mounts and it also changed how pets are equipped. Before the update pets were equipped in the armor/vanity menu so they did not take up a slot in your backpack. If player had a pet in the slot after the update that pet stayed equipped in that slot. So, Open backpack inventory. At the top of screen open the 2nd tap – the helmet icon one. On the left side of screen, you see the character wearing the armor that is equipped. Look down to the lower left side of the character. This is where you equipped the pet before the Feb 2020 update. If turtle pet is there move cursor over to it and you should be able to unequip it. Now once unequipped you will not be able to use this slot again. You will place a new pet in the backpack and equip it there.
