Game turned from easy to near impossible - help appreciated
I am playing a mage, managed to hit level 18 and I feel like I hit the wall. Most likely the problem comes from being underequipped, but I simply can't find recipes for any half decent gear.

I'm wearing the Magus Conjurer set and my best weapon is the Zussanna of the witches three. I went to the spring event and there's no way I can beat anything my level in reasonable time. My fights consist of rolling away/around the enemy and stinging them for about 100HP per hit

Anyone has an advice on what to do to make the character manageable and enjoyable?

EDIT:
Those monkey shamans are absolute nightmare - their damage over time is completely unmanageable for me

since the loot (and quests???) are proceedual that might be why you are having shoddy luck the other thing is, this game is all about back-tracking and crafting/digging etc, don't JUST focus on getting to the boss basically ;) because you will fail)

Thanks, I still think I'm severely underequipped, I'm not looking for bosses - I just want to get the even island before the event ends ;)

Armor can be interchanged between classes (except for Lv 1 and Lv 29 & 30). Try this setup. The Magus Conjurer armor is more for constant use of skill/spells. At the Altar craft the other Lv 12 armor, Spell Stormer Robe, Gloves, Legs. Unlike the Magus Conjurer, Spell Stormer armor puts more bang into your weapon by increasing Critical Strike Chance & Damage. For the hood go to Ranger station and craft the Unfallen Elite Lv 12 Hood. This will give you a 30% chance to help you heal when you defeat an enemy.

Next the weapon. The Spring event going on now has 6 enemies:
Bamboo Araktula (Earth Damage strong):
Bamb-Utan (Earth Damage Strong)
Jade Golem (No Weakness)
Hollow Knight of the Dragon (Dark Damage Strong)
Hollow Knight of the Undead (Dark Damage strong)

One of the problems with the Zussanna of the witches three is there is no talent bones for skull weapon like you will have using the wand and selecting “Wand” in Talents section. It is an Electro weapon and the weakest weapon against an “Earth Strong enemy”. Fire is the “Earth Strong enemy’s” weakness.

Craft a Masterwork Wand of Fire. Its force is 42 with a +12% Critical Strike Damage factor. The Zussanna of the witches three has a force of 80, but as explained before it is the ineffective when fighting the spider, and Monkey. In the Mage Talent section, at player Lv 10 you can select talent “Master of Elements”. This increases the bones damage by 25% when your damage type (Fire weapon) matches the enemy’s weakness. Also selecting Talent “Mana Shield” will help, in that, sometimes damage to you will be taken from the blue mana bar and not your red hearts, extending your life in a fight.

So, with the armor change, weapon change, you will have a fighting chance with the spiders and monkeys at Spring Event. The Jade Golem has no weakness so just shoot and dodge. The Hollow Knight are weak to Light Damage but at your level you will not have any light damage weapons.

When I was a lower level player, I found that using the water ponds helps. Most enemies cannot go into water over their head, if they do it is instant death. In a pond, build up dirt blocks that are 10-11 block spaces away from the edge of the water and that have you above the water. When you fire at the enemy, they will come to the edge but will not go in. They just stand there and let you shoot them. At 10 block spaces away monkey will not release his poison at you because you are too far away.

A bit long, but hope it helps you enjoy the game.

The above post has a lot of good advice, I don't have much to add. Elements are good, as well as critical damage and multi-strike.
I also haven't played a mage beyond level 15, so not much experience with that class specifically.

So my tip: play with other people. I bought this game for my boyfriend as well and whenever we have trouble with an enemy, he draws the aggro and runs around like his hair's on fire, and I kill it with my ranger. He can use scrolls, potions and heal skill to heal himself as well as place totems.

I guess that's another tip: craft the Heal skill and carry health potions, and healing scrolls if you have them. Their cooldown timers don't cancel each other out. I haven't really found anything that counters the poison effect, so if anyone knows anything..

If you need some support just to get past the monkeys so you can get the reward island, feel free to add me, I really enjoy playing with other people!

The spiders are the easy ones - I can one shot them with improved version of fireball spell, it's the monkey mages that cause headache. Golems are bothersome due to their insane health pool but a good source of pretty jade blocks.

I had mana shield already selected - it reminded me of diablo times ;)

following the advice I switched to fire skull (almost double damage over the lightning one) and will make some wands - I don't have any titanium so I'm limited to gold which I managed to pilfer from timed event

I got inspired by suggestion with water ponds (there's very little water on that island) so I started to build dirt cages - find a bottle neck, clog it with dirt blocks with a slit in between and fire from safe distance - saved my ass on those narrow walkways to the mountain temple.
