The compass tells me the portal is off the island
It’s pointing off the island into the distance but there is nothing out there

No but I can paint you an image. I’m standing at the edge of the island looking at nothing and that’s where the compass points.

The compass has a red pointer that always points North. To get the compass to indicat the direction of a portal you select the compus and activate it in the same manner you would fire you weapon (pull the trigger). Small color squars appear showing the direction to the portal. If you are surrounded by the colored squares then portal is directly below you. You can dig down until it is found or look around in that area for a dungeon that will take you to it.
