How to get my character names back

I couldnt log on for almost a year due to the Steam laucher being broken and frozen when i tried to log on, not for lack of trying or intrest and now i finally get on only to find my Character names have been taken from me with no warning. This is NOT fair! How can I rename my characters from arbitrary letters to what they were or some sembalance of?
