Lag problem
I havent played the other campaigns, but i tried the aliens campaign and when i kill a person and eat them to regenerate the alien life the game suddenly gets a massive fps drop and starts lagging badly, i tried avp gold on windows xp and worked nicely on the same pc, i upgraded to windows 7 and have this version and it lags and get painfully slow, i think its when the bodies dissapear after being killed, i tried a little bit the skirmish mode with a marine and the game appeared to work nicely, so far i have this problem with the alien campaign only, i havent even finished the first level because of it, i even tried to ignore the lag and when the game lagged again it closed itself off without any warning or message.

Why does this happen? Ive tried some old games in my windows 7 and work ok, like blood 2 and shogo (havent played them completely).

It could be just a bad installation. You tried reinstalling?
Michael1990 Feb 11, 2014 @ 1:35pm
Well, nope but i dont really think its a bad installation, a friend lended me a copy his avp classic 2000 to check if it would work on my windows 7 (because gold supposedely wont work on 7) and i got the same problem, strange thing is with me the problem is somehow less annoying, because with his game the lag wouldnt stop and with my game at least it seems it dissapears (but comes back again), weird :/

Do i lose my configuration if i reinstall the game? i will try it anyway but i dont want to rebind all the keys again.

That's strange to hear AvP Classic having problems on new machines. I would try what Skorp suggested and reinstall AvP Gold. If it persists then try installing this patch[homepage.eircom.net] for it and see if it helps.

Thank you both, i will try that, but well, my pc isnt that new to be honest, but i can run most new games, and i could run gold in xp without this problem, here in 7 i got this annoying lag with classic, but ok let me try that.

One thing, the version i have is classic 2000, not gold, it wont work on 7, or so i readed somewhere, but the page you gave me says steam's game work too.

Hey, i have a question, how do you install this? over the steam game in the same folder? and also would it cause any problems with my steam account? also i downloaded the automated installer, not the source code, and do i have to run the game first or install the patch first before running the game?

OK, sorry I must have missed something, I thought you were trying to get AvP GE to work. You shouldn't have problems with AvP Classic, it's optimised for new systems/hardware and OS, so that is a weird one. Reinstalling seems to be the option to try.

If your doing this for AvP Classic, then don't bother. That patch is mainly for AvP GE issues. If it's only happening with one isolated case within the game, it may be an installation corruption. It's the installer you need though, and you would be installing it to the AvP Gold directory, not AvP Classic.

Well, its curious because gold worked great (when i had xp) i tried my friend's copy of classic and did had the same problem (didnt tried installing gold on w7 because of what i said, and besides its 64 bits and not 32 like xp), tried my game and still have the lag problem but for some reason a bit less severe, should i try the installer then with this game if it still have the problem? because i really dont want to go back to xp, i got used to w7 and i like the os, i will check the game anyway to see if its fixed but i doubt it.

So the problem exists in both AvP GE and AvP Classic then? Well I run Windows 7 64bit and no problems at all with AvP Classic. There are issues with AvP Gold for me though which I expected anyway.

I do not think you need to return to using XP with AvP Classic, it was upgraded to support up to Windows 7. If you havn't already, try reinstalling AvP Classic on Steam. You can pretty much write off AvP GE if AvP Classic works fine.

No hehe, sorry i confused you, i had gold on xp and worked great, when i upgraded to 7 i saw somewhere online that it wouldnt work and that classic was made to work with 7 so i didnt bother trying to install gold, but well, i have that lag issue, as i told you i tried it and yep, the lag is still there, i reinstalled the game (deleted local content and downloaded it again) but it still get the lag in the alien campaign when there is a dead body, its weird that it works for you. But i dont know, maybe is it my gpu? or maybe something related to the fact that windows 7 runs the game with lower priority than normal (in the task manager)?
n3wt Feb 11, 2014 @ 11:46pm
Hm not sure then, it may be something related to specifics like graphics card, but who knows, could be any piece of hardware, it might not be any hardware causing it. I just don't see many people have compatibility problems with AvP Classic.

Well at least you ruled out the uninstall method. Maybe your friend can tell you his hardware and you can then compare with your own?

I found something curious, today i ran the game in windowed mode and the screen is completely black but i can hear the ambience and the sounds and i can see the alien claws (only triend the alien campaing) but everything else is black.

Reinstall DirectX http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

Windows 7 is missing some crucial system files related to DX9.0c (what AvP Classic uses, while AvP Gold uses DX7 or 8). It's also wise to update the drivers to your graphics card.
Michael1990 Feb 13, 2014 @ 6:00pm
Hi, about the driver update, i cant do that, always when i do it i get a bsod when i restart, and ive downloaded them using update from windows, from the drivers i download from the official site and with one of those driver pack dvd's, i even get one when i install windows (always blaming nvlddmkm.sys), in fact i tried to install again today the drivers and this time i got a black screen and the monitor light blinking (as if the cpu wasnt on). The driver i use is a really old one i downloaded from i dont remember what site, but i found it on some forum while trying to find a fix to that install bsod problem.

The name of the installer 169.28_forceware_winvista_64bit_english_beta (i kept it in case i reinstall windows).

About the dx9, i doubt it will work but let me check out.

BTW my gpu is an nvidia 7950gx2, in case it helps, and i have 3 gb of ram.

Edit: I got a message telling me i have the latest version of direct x, do i uninstall it from the windows uninstall option?

Even though this is an old thread, I had the same problem and the way I solved it wasn't mentioned in any thread here or elsewhere that I could find. Like the OP, I had lag issues when running AvP2 on Windows 7 64bit with an NVIDIA video card. I managed to solve them by entering the NVIDIA Control Panel -> 3D Settings -> Manage 3D settings -> Global Settings -> Vertical Sync. It was set to "Off" in my case. Setting it to "Adaptive" solved the problem.

I don't know if this will work for everybody, but it can't hurt to try.
