Not sure what you mean, all stats affect combat. A/S only affect the melee portion, and your defence matters no matter what type of combat you do.
The damage you do by magic is only affected by the magic stat, though. Max damage is due to the spell, but there's some calculation that reduces it - I think you can only hit max damage with each spell if your final magic stat (not the skill, the one beside armour and whatever) is greater than the mob's defense.
