Swordy has crap damage compared to archer and wizzy pretty much no matter what you do
just to clarify, you don't have worthless damage, you just have nowhere NEAR the damage you'd get from an Rdps, also personally not a big fan of hoppys, but that's just me.
I'm a griniding at the last area for level 280 right now. Groups love my DPS, they take me as damage and not tank.

This. I mean, it's not always the case, but just take one circle in Peltasta at rank 2 to be safe. You'll get into more parties just by having that.

yeah this is what i keep hearing, which is why my swordy is still sitting at 75 not being played
In other games, melee dps is higher to typically make up for lack of uptime, but this game doesn't seem to be at the stage where balance passes are a thing even though the game has already been out for years. So it's not so much that melee is weaker, but that they suffer from far less uptime on bosses and are prone to taking far more damage which means more points spent in constitution rather than in your damage stats.
People don't call it Tree of Magic for no reason. Currently magic skills cannot miss, be dodged, or blocked and generally, magic defense is absolutely abysmal compared to the damage one can do. There is no such thing as diminishing returns or CC immunities and you honestly cannot compare swordie restraint spam to just being freeze locked from 100% to dead by a Cryomancer.
Not saying swordies can't be fun, but the current toxic late game meta revolves around pretty much doing as much as possible so you place within the top 6 of a world boss's damage list or you get nothing. Just damage, nothing else matters so its basically 1 dpser and the rest of his group is there to make sure he doesn't die and to pump his damage as much as possible.
As one of the above posters stated, grab Peltasta at first class change and max swashbuckling, maybe a point into guardian. And then you can do something like hoplite next, then Cataphractx3, then Dragoon. Or just make any of the archer classes and killsteal all day.
