Failed to unpack data

Trying to do the training, can't get past the stalemate one, it says more must be downloaded, then it says failed to unpack data. Any suggestions?

Same for me, seems that the download system of game is broken. Would be nice some feedback from Valve... :S

I suspect it has to do with this game no longer being able in the Steam store

having the same issue...everything past stalemate training gives my the error unable to unpack data. has anyone contacted steam support yet?

ah, I have the same problem... too bad, I was saving this game for later, never really got into it :(

It sucks, I really only bought it for tutorial/training stuff because I realizeI'm not that good at chess. There are so many free chess programs, I imagine it's the only reason anyone would buy this type of program. Ohh well ordered chesmaster 10(disc) for like 20$ lets see how that works out...

I reinstalled fairly recently, but cannot download any of the later "Learning" sections due to this error... sucks...

It seems the files that are missing are actually in the Steam folder. But how to get them recongnised is beyond me.

This happened to me as well. I was not impressed as I like the tutorials as well, but outside of steam I found Chessmaster Grandmaster edition by Ubisoft. At least I can play it again.

I've found a solution.
Game tries to download http://playfirst.com/go/chessmaster_tutorials as a file to C:\ProgramData\Chessmaster Challenge\sounds2.pak and then unpack it. But it fails, because original website redirects to html webpage that obviously can't be unpacked, that's why error message is about failing to unpack data.

File is still presein in web archive, here: https://web.archive.org/web/20070702054217/https://playfirst.com/go/chessmaster_tutorials
To fool program into downloading from there open config.ini and change line

DownloadTutorials http://www.playfirst.com/go/chessmaster_tutorials

to

DownloadTutorials http://web.archive.org/web/20070702054217if_/http://www.playfirst.com:80/go/chessmaster_tutorials

(this is direct link to the file in web archive)
Then run the game and let it download as usual.

Then you can backup "C:\ProgramData\Chessmaster Challenge" folder just in case.
