An old exploit was to pre plot every country overnight before you capture and interrogate the first valet. The superpowers won't send anyone to investigate your island until then, so drop a couple construction workers in each zone, make sure your control room is staffed, and leave game running overnight. You can also abuse this to steal a ridiculous amount of gold. Regular plotting and stealing are good too, if you click on the character "token" on strategic map, it will tell you strengths and weaknesses, even among henchmen. I love this mechanic for resource gathering and mission unlocking.

You can also mod the spreadsheets to everything gives more infamy, faster plotting...so you'll unlock new events much faster without hours of plotting. Makes the game go a bit faster.

I am a EG noob and cant break through to the second island. How far am I when I have completed Machinations?

That's the last missions on island 1. Just save yourself the time and google it for the locations.
