How the heck do you make money?

I've had this game for years, and every year try it out for a couple of days before giving up because I never have money at the end of the day.

I try sending people around the world to get money, but I wind up micromanaging everything on the global map because the counter-agents keep picking them off.
I try focusing on developing the hotel but so far there are only two tourists on the island...

I mean I just don't get how the heck you make money in this game. I'm not even playing on a high difficulty. Any basic tips would be appreciated.

or if you have messed the strategies up just send minions to mid west it makes a lot of money

Without cheating, you can build an "Uber Trap", using starting traps. I use the civilians to trigger the room perpetually, and use the pop-up traps to brain drain.

The original "Uber Trap" uses freaks and nerve gas which you won't get for awhile.
