Evil Genius game patch questions
I am looking to install the fixes that are offered by the game patches, and i noticed theres an unofficial game patch meant for steam users, but it includes stuff that goes beyond the scope of the patch. things like the contents of the bonus CD, which i already have installed. also it appears that the unofficial patch changes some of the game play mechanics beyond what the official patch would. I am not interested in that. Is there a version of the patch that JUST has the patched files, and not the bonus CD contents, or changes to the custom changes to gameplay mechanics?

I don't know why the Bonus CD is even included in the unofficial steam patch. It was given away for free originally by the game devs, on their site, and is still out there floating around (working link below) and does indeed work with the steam version of the game as is. including it with the unofficial patch makes it seem like steam version were not supposed to have it in the first place, which is outright false.

if I only want the patched files, will the official patch work with the steam version of the game?

you obviously did not read my post. I already have the bonus CD installed. I don't want mods or any of the other game play changes made by the unofficial patch. I only want the updated files.
I did try to install the official patch, but evil genius started complaining that there was no CD drive found. as best as I can tell, not even the unofficial patch is able to update the .EXE to 1.01.

the best thing i have been able to do so far is install the offical patch, and then .... locate a NoCD patched version of the 1.01 executable to replace the one that was giving the "CD drive not found error"

I guess I can understand your point of view. If you ONLY want the official patch 1.01, you can find it via here with a full changelog: https://evilgeniuswiki.wordpress.com/wiki/official_patch/

Edit: I missed part of your first post and hadn't read your second post yet. I'm guessing you get the error message because the patch was created before it was available digitally. Indeed a No CD-patched version would only work in that case.

I'm guessing you've already tried it after using said patched exe-file?

yes, it is working with the NoCD Patched 1.01 executable. i just wish that there was a way to ensure it's safety, since the .EXE was patched by software pirating group. these days, you never know when those groups have included a "hidden surprise" in the form of a virus, trojan, or rootkit. I am pretty confident in my PC security setup, and there have been no virus or other security warnings, so I guess i am safe? I wish the .EXE in the steam version was already patched to 1.01. there are some definite improvements in the newer .exe.

all said, i am liking the game with out the gameplay mechanics changes introduced by the unofficial patch. As far as i can tell, not even the unofficial patch has the updated .EXE. Which to me, makes the whole unofficial update almost pointless.

Got to admit, I still find it odd that the Steam version doesn't include 1.01, especially as that was an official patch released shortly after the game first came out years ago! (The tell for anyone that doesn't know, is the main menu of the game, if it says 'Load Save' it's 1.0 (fresh Steam install), if it says 'Load and Save' it's 1.01).

Regarding the unofficial patch, are you aware that the unofficial patch is just a self extracting RAR file? All it does is extract a bunch of config and other resource files into the games DynamicResources folder. As far as I know, it doesn't touch the game exe itself, i.e. it's not a binary patch.

If you install something like 7-Zip, you can just right click on the Patch.exe file and open it as an archive, or extract the contents to a folder instead. Alternately, just rename the file from Patch.exe to Patch.rar, then it can't be run/executed by accident, it just opens in 7Zip instead (or whatever you have installed to handle RAR files).

Then you can pick and choose which files you want to copy across into your game folder. i.e. If you don't want to change the population from the default 100 to 150 used by the patch, don't use the Patch version of Config/population.ini.

The only files inside the Patch.exe file are text files, .txt, .csv .desc and .pat, all of those are plain text so can be opened in a tool like Notepad.

So for example if you wanted to apply all of the unofficial patch, but didn't want to run the exe itself, you could just extract the contents to the game folder instead.

i just didn't want to mess with undoing all the other changes that the unofficial patch made. I just wanted the patched files (including the 1.01 .exe). I have a really slow internet connection, it's so slow, that only one person can go online in the house at a time, and even then we have slow internet. It's an issue with the ISP only making 6mbps speeds available where i live, not anything with the home network. If anything, the speed of the home network far outstrips the internet speed in terms of speed. anyways, I did eventually end up getting exactly what I wanted, if not how I wanted it. I ended up installing the 1.01 official Patch, and then installing a No-CD patch for 1.01 version of the game. It seems to be working perfectly. there has been no strange activity on my system or alerts from my security software so I don't think anything strange was hidden in the No-CD patch.
