1. Darkness is your friend. Snuff out all lights you find and sneak by blocking with nothing in your offhand. This makes it much less likely for enemies to see you.
2. Keep throwables handy. Tomahawks and throwing knives aren’t only powerful ranged weapons, they’re great for triggering boulder traps from a safe distance.
3. Look up! Boulder traps can be spotted by dark holes in the ceiling. This also applies to bats hanging from it as well. Spotting danger early is always a boon.
4. Eat right. A big beginner’s trap is not eating enough when hungry because the food-related messages can be a bit misleading. If you eat something and the message says “That x hit the spot!”, keep eating. Stop when it says “Oof. You’re really full now.” to maximize the time you have between meals.
5. Beware magic! Magic is probably the most dangerous damage type in the early-to-mid game due to spells doing fixed damage that ignore AC. If you find anything with either magic resistance or magic reflection, hang on to it! It might mean the difference between victory and getting melted by a fireball.
6. Go for the back! Melee and ranged attacks do more damage if you hit your target in the back. If you see your foe distracted, take advantage to maximize your lethality.
