About the appraising system
So what influences the possibility of failing to identify a specific item ? Does that mean the item is too high level for a character's appraising skill or is it some kind of random chance ?

I'm very curious to the answer to this as well, I like playing the wizard for spells, but I can never seem to be able to appraise anything

I think it's all related to the quality of the item. I attempted to appraise a high level ring and even after a few fails, the appraisal skill increased. You can also appraise absolutely everything you pick up, even rocks and slabs of meat.

E: Slow, but ^ that

It's based off your appraising level, for sure. Probably some sort of item level, as the more you level it, the easier/faster it becomes for more common items.

Healer has the same trouble starting out. Food tends to be the easiest to start with, but as you keep trying, everything gets easier.

Spam appraisals on the countless mouldy cheese, pies, and meat you find until you're novice, move up to the lore books, before taking on the potions, gear, gems, etc.

Appraising an item means to identify it. The main reason to actually do this is to check if the item is cursed or not. Cursed items stick to the player, which means you can't remove them without using something to remove the curse like a scroll.

Also to add to the discussion, i tried to appraise a worn iron sword once while playing a cleric and it failed to identify for some reason. So i don't think it has something to do with levels because a worn iron sword is pretty low level.

Its based on your appraisal skill, none novice skilled, etc.
Can't identify things right off the bat until you practice a bit, unless you're a merchant.

I usually appraise things in this order:
food->potions->scrolls->lore books/weapons->rings/staves/charms->gems

Seems like easier items appraise faster and are more likely to be successfully appraised, allowing you to raise your appraisal level and look at more difficult items, etc.

As I have noticed, the less an item is worth in gold, the easier/faster it is to appraise the item.

The higher your appraise level is, the easier/faster it is to appraise an item.

And even if you fail to appraise an item, it seems that you get a very small amount of exp in the appraise skill.

So, an easy way to level up this skill is to start off apraising food>Misc items>low level
gear>ect. Although rocks are the easiest/fastest item to identify, I would not recomend starting out with them due to the speed at which you look at them can be exausting depending on the starting appraise level.
