You drop your inventory on death, but you can turn on keep inventory.
There is solo and it is very fun, but also very challenging.
Dying in co-op turns said dead guy into a ghost that revives when you get to the next floor. If you don't have Keep Inventory turned on, they leave a death box that they can open after they revive to get all their stuff back.
1. People get revived at the start of each floor, until then they spawn as a ghost that can interact with objects and slow enemies, this allows you to basically float around and be either a light source or point out threats to your coop players, you're also able to push items around. Just make sure you pick up their "death box" as it contains all of their items.
2. Yes and it's fine.
