Barony Tips And Tricks
So me and my friend like to coop but we get our ass kicked by anything remotely challenging. It'd be nice for fellow divers to share there tips and tricks. I'll share what little I have and add any new ones to the OP if you have any.

1. Olympic swim amulets let you swim faster, swimming faster= more xp, use this to level up swimming and then switch our your amulet for something more useful.

2. Potions can be equipped to be thrown, I'm not sure what all effects this might have on enemies.

3. You can access chests that are directly behind barred doors.

4. You still gain experience on failed appraisals, and can still level your appraisal skill. Appraisal is extremely important to avoid curses. (merchants start with high appraisal)

5. Using cursed scrolls removes a spell, if you still have the tome, you can relearn the spell. I suggest keeping important spells for this purpose.

6. You can also share spell tomes as long as each person has the ability to use said spells. (anyone know of a way to train spell usage as a non spell user?)

7. You can use pickaxes/mining spell to break boulders that fall from traps.

8. Mana regenerates over time, afk if you need to recharge your mana.

anything about not getting one-shot at start of a new game? Because a rat or some strange skeleton fighter is way too much.
no matter what class i pick i get slaughtered in the first few minutes against a single enemy.

They hit you relatively quickly. The goal is not to get hit. You either raise your shield (they will either miss or still take like 2-3 damage) Ideally though, you will turn the opposite way and run. Food should be plentiful and lying around to sustain you though. I like mages since the mana regenerates (albeit, very slowly) and they can hit and run much easier.

died from hunger due to lack of any kind of food on first floor. I ate 1 moldy cheese tho.

this game is hard...

...i had less trouble playing dark souls lol.

When I start a new game. what should my primary objective be? Run around like a madmen to pick up stuff? Kill everything? Rush to the next floor?

i played the crap out of dark souls, but this game is easy once you find the playstyle that works best for you.

i personally think the wanderer class is the strongest class of them all, with the arcanist in second but that becuase i played WAY to much barony.

i am also the one who suggested a higher difficulty setting so i may be biased :)

(EDITED)
I'm a little late, but I'll share my experience here.
I mainly play as a wizzard but I've played with a lot with other classes too.
Some tips will be just for magic users, I'll number them using a "M" before the numbers, so it's easy to find them.

1 - Mouldy food has a little chance of not getting you sick, so carry one if you don't have much, to use as your last chance while starving

2 - Pick up mouldy foods in the begining, just to appraise them, and them throw them away. It i'll raise your appraising skill lvl and your charecter lvl.

3 - Any skill you lvl up, will give you lvl experience, so appraising, swimming, drinking (alchemy), etc can increase your character level.

4 - Holding the atack button, will prepare a powerfull atack ( I'll call them strong hit), the atack will be delivered automatically, so timing is essencial in using it. You'll ned some practice, but it's totally worth it. Don't use it if your opponent is already melee atacking you!

5 - Use ranged weapons a lot in the beggining, they save a lot of hp and mp(for magic users). It's good to use them at late game as well.

6 - Space bar uses the left hand item. You can block with a shield, get a better ilumitation with torches and you can use a spell from a book, without equiping the spell(not sure if it was always in thegame).

7 - If you don't have anything i your left hand, and press space bar, you'll enter in the stealth mode. Enemies will less likely notice you and you'll see better in the dark.

8 - Stealth is usefull for every class!! To pass throught enemies or to surpriese atack them.

9 - DON'T USE LIGHT SKILL WHILE STEALTHING!!!

10 - Don't be close to your friends while stealthing, their torches will reveal you.

11 - Removing torches from the walls will decrease the chance of your enemies notice you.

12- You can use stealth to backstab your enemies with a strong hit ( tip 4), it'll make a critical hit, if you kill the enemy,a message will appear telling you assassinated the opponent. It increases your stealth skill.

13 - Even as a melee, avoid to go straight to the enemy, start the combat with ranged weapons, magic or with a backstab (tip 12)

14- After the start of a combat, if you're in your enemy range, equip your shield, and use it!(Tip 6)

15 - If you have a lot of food, have the ring of slow digestion, or is a skelleton, it's very usefull to stay on a level casting spells and waiting for your mp recover and do it again, and again... You win magic and cast spells and character levels.

16 - If you have a lot of food, have the ring of slow digestion, or is a skelleton it's very usefull to level up swimming. Just stay in the water, you don't need to move to level up the skill. Just let your character there, you can be afk. . Its usefull to combine it with tip (13).DON"T DO IT ON A MINOTAUR LVL!!

17- Watch out for the sand labirinth levels, you wont find much food there. Don't do tips 15 and 16 there, unless you're a skelleton.

18 - Its good to stay much time in a level to kill and explore every thing, just have in mind, you need food!

19 - Do the "secret levels" like the gnome level. They are usually a lot more harder then normal levels, butf you succed, you'll be very awarded.

20 - If you find a staff of a "useless skill", like staff of locking, use all charges of it, you'll gain cast, magic and character levels.

21 - Take care of your weight in the initial levels. If you don't have much strenght, carring a lot of stuff, or equiping chest armors, will slow you down a lot. Speed is essencial in your surviving.

22 - Look for boots of speed!

23 - aways carry a pick, they can take you out of some dangerous situations.

24 - opening spells can open locked chests, and bar doors( usually opened by a switch). Aways carry one staff of opening to save time in the minotaur lvls, or to go to secret levels.

25 - If you plan to go to the underworld, be sure to have levitation ring or skill or a ton of levitation potions.

26 - Don't ever underestimate unknown enemies, aways watch your health while fighting them, to see how strong they are.

27 - Try to stick with one type of melee weapon, the lvl of a weapon skill is very very much influential in your damage.

28 - A better weapon is not always better, because of your weapon skill. ( even fisting your oponents can be better if you have the skill, Once I even did a punching character, it was awesome).

29- In coop, try to make every player use a different kind of melee weapon.

FOR MAGIC USERS:

Magic will be your best weapon!

M1 - Don't be afraid of using magic, in the beggining of the game this is your way to survive, use it, otherwise you'll die. Use it to kill major enemies in the beggining.

M2 - To save mp, try to start fights with magic, but end it with a melee hit. Use the strong hit (tip 4) always your opponents didn't reach you.

M3 - Avoid to attempt to magic atack and enemy who is walking, and not chasing you they often go right or left, and then they will dodge your spell, and you'll loose mp. Try to start fights when enemies are stopped or in narrow passages(where you can't turn left or right) or chasing you( they go straight to you).

M4 - Always check how much mana you have before engaging in combat with strong enemies.

M5 - If you're in a tough situation, don't save your mana potions, they will save your life. Usually magic is my best weapon.

M6 - Watch out your HP if you're playing as a Vampire(they can use hp to cast), it's usefull to use hp as magic resourse, but it can be your doom.

M7- You can equip two spells, by equiping one, and equiping a spell book in your left hand( tip 6).

Lol bro, you're really late xD. Still those were some very helpful tips you gave! Hope OP doesn't mind that this thread is suddenly active after 4 years, because I think a lot of people could benefit from this sort of thread.

Magic is very hard to train for characters inept with magic, but there's a few ways to get started. If either your intelligence or Magic skill is greater than 0, you can learn Light, a cheap and simple spell that's commonly used for casting practice. Although you may fumble, (and waste a lot of mana, yikes!) you can wield a higher-tier spellbook and attempt to cast with it. Harder, more expensive magic has a greater chance to up your skills. You also gain Magic and Casting skills while using staves. Work your way up the ladder and maybe you'll become a skilled caster in time!
