Report a translation problem
In other games that have systems like you suggest [Minecraft], selecting / readying the item on its own has no effect. But in Barony, since items can be cursed or cause negative effects to the player by readying the item, this would make the game more frustrating to play.
For a future update, we have designed a way to 'highlight' an item in the hotbar without actually readying it, as part of a design for gamepad support, but we may be able to leverage that system for the mousewheel as well.
So there you have an explanation for why it's not already supported, and a teaser that we are thinking of doing something to change it in the future.
