Change difficulty?
Put simply this game is too hard. Being repeatedly killed saps any enjoyment out of the game when you're making no progress.

How can you change the difficulty, or buff player health etc?

There are several gameflags you can flip if you find the game to be too punishing at first. The Minotaur, Hunger, starting the game with an Amulet of Life Saving (+1 Life), and removing random Traps are common for some beginners. Find these settings in the Misc tabs of the Settings menu.

You may also find that playing as a Skeleton (who naturally doesn't hunger) or a Monk (who starts with a ring of slow digestion and who is heartier than most other classes) to be a less punishing compromise without altering the game rules.

Ontop of that; go on and take your time as those classes; use cursed shields as monk, since those often break (don't use one at legend) for blocking - Take your time appraising items and learning new spells by casting your Lightspell constantly - After a certain point, swap out out to cold or magic missle for more magic XP - Once you find water, taketime to get legend in swimming.

If you still find the game difficult - as a book would say

'Start from the gnomes, then the trolls, not the other way around'

Start with weaker enemies, rats, kill them, appraise their cheese and meat, and then move up to skeletons.

Also, run. Use Hit and run tactics at lower levels. Just about anything is a major threat in melee, but pretty much nothing has ranged attacks. So travel light, strike quickly, and run like hell.

Problem is even with the tips- it's still WAY too hard.

When you spawn you're mobbed by enemies from the get go. Skeletons will just bust through the door straight away.

You're low on health, I best eat some food - the food kills you.

Picks up amulet, use it - it kills you.

I haven't survived more than 5 minutes yet...

That's why i ask is there no easy mode, or console commands?

Remember to use a shield for when your starting out

if your sneaking or plan on stealthing, use range to pot shot then finish off with full charge sneak attack

gems/rocks/potions can be thrown for damage

Drink every type of potion (even acid/blindness) to level up alchemy

your starter class I believe pushes the spawn rates of certain items (wanderer class seems to spawn more foods)

Oh i almost forgot

burn out every staff of magic you come across for better casting/magic you can get your hands on

For the first problem, that's just plain bad luck. Played with a friend yesterday, he was basically a pack mule, and just as we spawned on the floor the door is crushed, and a boulder rolls over him.

For the second and 3rd, appraise the items first, and then read their names. The older the food sounds (such as mouldy or rotten), the more chances of puking you have. Same goes for other items. The game is quite obvious on what things do usually. "Amulet of Strangulation" will obviously strangle you.

If an item is cursed (unless you're a succubus), don't use it. Weapons and armor will not be removable, food and consumables will have side effects, etc.

I wouldn't necessarily call Cursed items so black and white.

Cursed staves, and cursed shields to the right person could still hold major use; for either mana, a single floor-wide use, or otherwise for that bit of extra A.C, and Shield proeffecieny. - Such as the case with Monk; where a cursed shield is only to be broken the next few minutes, to no expense of the player. - Or with all classes; a cursed stave proves useful for that tiny bit of magic and casting experience, or that one wall you need to dig to get to another part of the map.

Finally; if you particularly want to have a better run; Try a Succubus Wizard. - Succubus can use any spellbook, cursed, normal or blessed and still learn a spell, this means there's no risk in quickly using spellbooks, so you can get rarer spells far quicker than the average - Of course, you should still be careful not to expend too much mana, but you can get far doing this alone.

For the mobbing aspects, if you sense multiple enemies (be it hearing or seeing them), I often find myself indescribably moving to a better position, like a more open location, or around a corner that I can get a quick sneak attack around, now admittedly this is from hundreds of hours of playing, and probably is more instinctive than it is an actual strategy, however it's still worth seeing if you can replicate such a method, on-top of this, I would say if you know multiple enemies are coming, pick at the notably weakest, or the closest first, two hits, run away. Then kill it from a bit of a distance with some backpedal melee attacks, gems, or ranged weapons, repeat this for each memory - Just be sure you know what you're backing yourself into, before you back up. The wrong place to do this could just land you in an even worse situation than the initial horde.

Now I will admit, I have had times where I've had so many enemies in a room, that it feels unfair - This often happens to me in Gnomish mines, but infrequently, but not rarely in some later areas. In these situations, I often find there's too many enemies for me to feasibly pick off, so what I do is I go into a very strategic mode, where I run away, killing whatever is in my path if I can't get a straight way, but otherwise getting far away, gathering my baring, then going back a bit, and picking off whatever followed me, then returning to the initial location. Where I will use my new-found experience from the previous enemies (and sometimes loot) to help take out everything else.

Overall, I would say your chances of winning a run come down to what you're best at, and how time-tested your instinct in the dungeon is. If you go a class you more or less understand, or are instinctively better at (like forming strategies on the spot, and having a shocking amount of them work). - I would say Wizard/Monk are gotos for newer players, but I wouldn't say everyone can win at those - I started with Cleric, I moved onto Rogue myself, then to Wizard/Rogue, finally I found myself at Joker, where I now mix between Joker and Mesmer.

I found my self lacking at best when I used other classes - Such as Brewer or Warrior, although I'm sure if I wanted to I could play those after one or two runs, I do noticably die more as them - One class that has no doubt challenged me is Accursed; much to my surprise.

Now sorry if that was a bit of a lecture-y rant, but if you need me to, I wouldn't mind hopping in some runs with you, Delmol, if you wish to, that is.
