If you're in multi, try getting a bow or just use your fists in stealth mode to get as much sneak attack damage off of mobs other players or your summons are tanking. Since they probably don't get experience from mobs other players kill you have to be an aggressive part of that if you're worried about the xp sharing.
If you're finding that they are too squishy, don't let them die. You can re-absorb them for almost the same amount of mana that it takes to cast them with only minor diminishing returns scaling with their remaining hp.
They are pretty much a solo class as other people in multiplayer aren't gonna just let them kill everything. The summons don't have to do all the work, they just need to get the kill.
