Try starting off as Monk, Wizard, Arcanist, Cleric.
All are easier classes to start off with in my opinion.
Wizard might take some time if you either miss some spells or run into mana problems.
But typically you'll start getting enough mana regen to not have major issues.
TYPICALLY this is better than standing and fighting but if you're not fast enough you can run into problems. If you cant run fast enough blocking every other attack will work. But trying to block every attack will get you out of sync and you'll miss some blocks.
Adding too this, take it slowly but surely. Don't be afraid to die, but keep every possibility in mind.
That corner, could it have a troll, or could there be a boulder when I round it? How about I toss a gem down it, and remove the boulder possibility?
Think about some more out-of-the-box strategies while you're at it too, your environment can most certainly be used to your advantage; as you could easily use that rock to set off a boulder a trap by tossing it under, or that cursed gem as that one extra point of damage before charging in.
Furnishings is a sort of a wall, you can loop around it to escape quicker than your foe, and possibly trick them out with it.
The minotaur is not necessarily as dangerous as it may seem, it may be big and fast, but rest assured - Prepare yourself some powerful magics, and you shall take it down with a good round about on the map.
Yeah, I was doing the same thing when I first started. Played a warrior, continued to die on the first dungeon.
You will eventually learn the game if you take it slow, and once you are able to get faster, you'll wonder how you ever had a problem with the first dungeon.
a sheild might be your best friend as they can often negate all melee damage
look for magic cloaks/amulets with magic reflection
get allys and fight among them
It seems I've unfortunately fallen into this group. Been waiting for a new life to the game for a while.
If I had some suggestions Vuud, take it slowly, and Richard pointed out something crucial, Gems beat traps, and traps beat monsters in alot of cases (except later ones).
You should also only carry what you need to, appraised, not needed gear should be let go of if there is no shop to sell it to, unless it is valuable enough in your eyes.
I play with all three turned off since I enjoy exploring every nook and cranny of the levels rather than needing to rush due to hunger or a giant cow man trying to cut me in half.
