Despite appearances at first glance, Doktor’s comment does have merit.

Your movement speed is determined by a combination of your Dex and your Str. The former affects your base speed in a linear fashion (higher Dex=faster movement) while the latter affects your carrying capacity, which modifies your speed based on a percentage (Ex. A character using only 25% of their carry capacity will be faster than a character using 50%).

It’s entirely possible, especially in the early stages of the game where spiders are most common, that you have low Dex and are carrying too much.

Here’s a couple of weight management tips:

1. Drop things that you want to carry between floors near the entrance room, an exit, a shop, or some other kind of easily found landmark while you explore the floor. Dropped items only disappear if they fall into a pit, so you don’t have to worry about losing anything.

Note that I highly advise against doing this on floors with a Minotaur timer or floors with a high goblin population. Goblins in particular are scavengers and will make use of anything they find on the ground.

2. Money has weight. Iirc, every 100 coins weighs a single unit of weight, so going on selling sprees with a maxed Trading skill will slow you down greatly. You can drop money in 100 coin increments by opening your menu, placing your cursor over your gold count and pressing the “Use” button. Holding the button down will drastically speed up the process. Just like with items, money you drop won’t despawn unless dropped over a pit. Unlike regular items, no monsters come to mind that steal dropped money bags, so it’s arguably safer to drop your money than other items.

Hope this helps. :)

I was referring to spiders attack animation and range, and I only play high dex unarmed characters, I should be able to have -some- expectation of being able to fight one.

Probably would have helped if you put that info in the original post.

As for what you mentioned: Dex is purely for movement speed and damage from projectile and thrown weapons. Unarmed gets its damage from Str. If you’re going for a high Dex character, use ranged weapons.

Another option is stealth. Stay in the shadows and use hit-and-run tactics. That might help.
