Tinkering could do with a rework
Tinkering is probably the least used and least useful skill in the game. This is partly due to how rare tinkering kits are. In over 100 hours of play, I’ve only ever seen three tinkering kits. Additionally, the use for a tinkering kit is very niche, being restricted to scrapping excess items and making tools like lockpicks.

Now, things like lockpicks are not as useful as you’d think. Anything a tool made in the kit can be used for, there is a spell that does the same thing that is generally more readily accessible than either the tinkering kit or tool. Magic makes the utility of tinkering obsolete.

Now for the biggest issue with Tinkering: the ability to repair items. Unless you have 100 in the skill, you can only repair the kit itself. Leveling the skill is very slow, even if you constantly scrap, build, and use the tools in a cycle. It takes too long to max out for it to be a practical skill choice, which means any class that starts with points in the skill have wasted points.

Here’s what I suggest to rework Tinkering: allow the tinkering kit to repair items from the beginning, with the amount you can repair being determined by your skill level. Like so:

0-19: Can only repair the tinkering kit.

20-39: Broken items can be repaired to decrepit at the cost of scrap.

40-59: Broken items can be repaired to decrepit for free. Decrepit items can be repaired to worn at the cost of scrap.

60-79: Decrepit items can be repaired to worn for free. Worn items can be repaired to serviceable at the cost of scrap.

80-99: Worn items can be repaired to serviceable for free. Serviceable items can be repaired to excellent at the cost of scrap.

100: Serviceable items can be repaired to excellent for free.

That just covers repairs. The regular 100 skill bonuses would apply as well.

I hope this feedback is taken into consideration and I would like to hear other ideas as to how Tinkering could be reworked into a more useful skill. :)

When you do find yourself a tinkering kit and work to achieve those higher values? You can potentially create enough bombs to instagib the double end boss fight.
Requires a lot of scrap, but it's worth it haha

lol, it doesnt matter if magic makes tinkering obsolete... which it doesnt, what matters is variety in avenues of gameqlay.

Sure, the dev coulda just made a sqell that summons a sentry... but thats boring.

instead, we have an entirely new avenue of gameqlay revolving around collecting materials and fortification. controlling key areas on the maq. think about the multiqlayer qotential. tinkerers could literally set uq bases and control chokeqoints on the maq. its all very cool.

I was a beta tester for the DLC update. Tinker used to be extremely OP.

(beware of spoilers if you haven't played or beaten the game)
