Yes! It was.
Thusfar it will use an entirely new engine, among other things, for now it will probably be using old-assets, but they're looking to get new assets for everything.
While we don't have sure-fire evidence of anything yet, what is sure is that it's in development, and we can expect it at some point! For better information you should wait for a dev reply, not a community member, but regardless I look forward to Barony 2.
Due to the fact that our next game has required a new engine, there's a lot of development to do before we can talk about much with confidence. I'd say we're still in a gameplay prototyping / tech development stage, though we are also building content.
The engine itself (devoid of any content) is ALREADY OPEN SOURCE!

On one hand I want to temper expectations, in that we may actually be tackling another project before a Barony sequel. But we do have a Barony sequel in the works as well.
If you follow us on Twitter you can see some screenshots of our other project using our new engine, SpacePunk.
Like Barony it'll be one-of-a-kind as a first-person co-op RPG. Instead of taking after roguelikes, it is more inspired by the themes and visuals of immersive sims, especially System Shock 2, though it still uses procedural content generation which sets it apart from games of its ilk (in addition to being fundamentally a co-op game).
I'm excited to share more about SpacePunk as things move forward.

Our goals for a Barony sequel are to be "like Barony but better!" as a simple guiding principle. Our new engine is empowering us to do a lot of things that we wanted to do for Barony, but given the tech that Barony is built on, we don't feel it's wise to backport into the game. Note this doesn't mean that Barony will be unsupported! We are continuing to work on support and additions to Barony that make sense in the scope of its engine. But as it concerns major engine features, building a new game makes much more sense to us. So features like split-screen, drop-in-drop-out play and better lighting & shadows are on the table in our next games, in addition to animator-driven motion for characters, etc. It's also built from the ground-up to be even more modder friendly.
That said, Barony 1 has a lot of great content and features in it that doesn't port over to the new engine for free. As a result, I think it's smart to expect the game to be different in a lot of ways, rather than simply "Barony HD" with copy/pasted gameplay.
Let's not turn the Barony forum into a defacto SpacePunk or Barony 2 forum. But given that we want to engage you guys and are pumped that you're interested in our next games, I hope that I've been able to satisfy your curiosity! I'll talk with the guys about a more appropriate place for us to have deeper discussions and showcases of what we're working on.
As long as the spirit of Barony is preserved, I think I'd be fine with it. I cant put my finger on what about barony makes it so awesome.
I wish I knew Lua because I'd be all sorts of down to mess around with the engine to see what its like.
