I can't provide much specific port forwarding help other than the usual guides on the net and checking canyouseeme site while the host lobby is open and making sure that's ok.
What port number you using? Do other games with forwarding work ok?
I tried using port 14300, because Pummel Party uses it and works fine. My friend is using port 6510.
Also I would try the steam lobby and see how it goes if all else fails, since we only use Steams servers to negotiate a lobby and then from then it's P2P network stuff when in-game.
I'd expect Hamachi should work a bit better in general, sure some delay but not the issues you noted. So there's some network trouble here.
Hope you can get something going! If there's an error popup in Barony trying to connect can you please post the message and the contents ofyour log.txt file after that occurs.
I get a message saying it couldn't connect.
Here is what is in the log file:

We use both UDP/TCP so if possible can you check if UDP/TCP are BOTH enabled in firewall + anywhere else the network is setup.
Also try running as administrator, restarting computer etc
